The Crows were almost unique among the tribes of the Great Plains in never making war on white people. Instead they at first remained fairly neutral in the Plains wars, then provided the US cavalry with many scouts. This led to them being treated with respect and even kindness by the agents appointed to their agency and by the government in general. Crow warriors would even go after enemy Blackfoot warriors who had stolen horses from white settlers and return their horses to them if possible.
Like all Plains people their historic diet of mainly buffalo meat was changed to beef, flour, coffee and sugar under the reservation system, but they took to farming very easily and gradually became expert stock breeders and farmers.
The Crows were permitted to remain on a small portion of their traditional tribal lands and although they went through the usual forced education and other cultural changes they have never lost their native language and ceremonies. This tolerance by the authorities reflects their policy of helping white people rather than fighting them.
