The life of serfs was somewhat improved by the apprentice system employed by guilds. There was finally a way for commoners to improve their lot in life. Improvements in manufacturing techniques increased availability of products-- most were still out of reach of the common people. Society was moving more and more to being commerce/manufacturing based.
