The saber-toothed cat defended itself primarily with its claws. It can easily reach out and slash an antagonist. It should be noted that in spite of having the elongated teeth for which it is famous, these teeth can be broken, and the big cat had to take a bit of care when using them, even in its own defense. If you have ever watched footage of a modern big cat attacking something or defending itself, the beast leads with its claws in either case where the chips are down. And so did Smilodon and its cousins. Note that the cat might run from a given antagonist, or it might climb if it is able to do so. It also growled, roared, hissed and spat to intimidate enemies, just like the big cats of today. A link can be found below. Also check YouTube for footage of big cats in conflict and see what they do.
Saber toothed cats probably stalked up on their prey and then either pounced or chased the animal for a short distance. If it could grab the prey, it would have killed it with a quick bite to the neck (the long canines were specialized for this). However, as with most large predators, most hunts would be unsuccessful.
Smilodon (saber-tooth cat) became extinct very recently, 10,000-15,000 years ago, and with the possible exception of the giant ground sloth and the Dire wolf, almost all large and intermediate sized mammal species on earth now were on earth then. Smilodon was a feline, and we can assume it hunted in ways similar to or identical to modern felines. That is, it almost certainly hunted like a modern tiger or lion does.
Saber toothed cats were not very fast, so they would have ambushed prey their prey, such as bison or elephants, to a close distance. Than, they would tackle it using their extremely muscular forelimbs. Lastly, they would dispatch their prey by opening their mouth 90 degrees and "stabbing" the prey animal in the throat using their powerful neck muscles (the didn't bite it because their bite force was weaker than that of modern big cats).
In the case of the famous genus Smilodon, they may have hunted in groups.

because as it lived in the ice age it must have been adapted to the environment but as the ice age ended the tigers would have drowned into the melted ice or they were probably killed due to the heat and changes in the environment. It could have also had happened because most of their pray ( e.g mammoths) would have died so they could have had starved to death.
They breast feed them for a little while until they are old enough for them to eat meat.
Clip its nails. Feed it water and try to feed it vegtables. If it won't take that try to feed it something like fish.
