Questioning of traditional thoughts and beliefs was common. New developments in each field changed the way, people saw the world, and art and literature reflected post-war uncertainty as well as creativity.

Art:

Sigmund Freud's ideas about the subconscious mind influenced a new artistic movement called Surrealism. Surrealism was an attempt to depict dreamlike features in a more realistic way.

Pablo Picasso created the style of Cubism. In Cubism, there are many bold, geometric shapes and sharp angles.

• In the United States, a new musical style was adopted by the African Americans in New Orleans, Memphis and Chicago called Jazz. Jazz music reflected society's freedom.

Literature:

• The Lost Generation believed that life was ultimately meaningless.

• New novels conveyed the author's concerns about the horror of war and the hopelessness of society.

• Philosophers turned to existentialism, which states that there is no real meaning in life and each person has to create their own meaning in it.
