Japan became an imperial power for several reasons. Here are some of them:
A. It needed colonies where it could sell its surplus goods.
B. It wanted to create an empire so it could be like Western imperial powers.
C. It required foreign workers in order to industrialize.
D. It wanted to have more security, prestige, wealth, and power
Before Japan could become an imperialist nation, it had to modernize itself and to say it another way, to westernize itself.
Japan was impressed by the military power of Western countries. They were also fearful that unless they made changes to itself, they would come under the domination of the Western powers. Most historians cite the year of 1867 as the year Japan began to modernize itself.
Once that was accomplished, Japan had the power to embark on a foreign policy of Imperialism. Japan lacked certain natural resources and imperialism was one way to obtain them:
A. Because Japanese industrialists needed raw materials and markets for their products, imperialism was a way to obtain them;
B. Japan embarked on the Sino Japanese War to overwhelm China and acquired a sphere of influence in Korea. In 1910, Japan would annex Korea;and
C. Japan embarked on the Russo Japanese War and defeated Russia. As part of the peace treaty, Japan acquired much of Russia's holdings in Asia;
There were a number of reasons that Japan turned to imperialism. They can be summarized by the following:
1. Japanese industrialists needed raw materials. In particular, these were cotton, iron ore, and oil;
2. Japan needed markets for their manufactured products;
3. Japanese nationalists sought honor for their Emperor and glory for their military forces; and
4. The idea that acquiring colonies would raise Japan to the rank of a great power.

China, moreso than Japan, had become controlled by European powers, which were militarily stronger. Japan participated more fully in the Industrial Revolution, and began to emulate the western powers in their imperialistic pursuits. China, Korea, Manchuria, and Indochina were soon targets of the Japanese as well as of European countries.

One reason a nation will become imperialistic is if they feel a need for more resources. For example, European countries expanded their reigns into Africa in order to take wood and precious metals from Africa.
