Should feel lighter than other pennies and make a different sound when moved around with other coins.
MoreAs of 2012 no additional 1974 aluminum cents have been authenticated. It's very unlikely that any would turn up in change. Any that do exist are most likely from the group that were "temporarily" loaned to members of Congress for examination. As the prior answer noted, an aluminum cent is lighter than a standard 1974 bronze cent or a modern zinc cent. The difference is significant; the aluminum coins weigh(ed) about 1 gram which is far less than the 2.5 gm weight of a zinc cent or 3.11 gm weight of a bronze coin.
You can use a magnifying glass to look closely at the numbers on the penny. Identify the numbers that indicate the year of minting. If the numbers are too rusted to read, gently clean the penny with a soft cloth or a mild cleaning solution to reveal the year.
All pennies from 1944 have the wheat ear reverse.
You probably mean date. Series is used when identify paper money. The date is on the right side on the front.
If the coin shows lots of wear, scratches, and dirt it is circulated. If it is still shiny, with very few scratches it will probably be uncirculated.
It is really hard to tell because there isn't any gravity in space so it would just float around.
There is no market value for the 1974 aluminum cent because it's illegal to own one.
Because the legality of the coins is in doubt and currently are illegal to have, a value can't be given.
No they are illegal to own and would be confiscated by the secret service if one were put for sale
No, such a coin was only minted in 1974 and all examples save for a few were supposed to have been melted down.
No value can be given because no 1974 or 1974-D aluminium Lincoln cents have ever been sold. Only one was donated to the Smithsonian Institution for the National Numismatic Collection.
No, though the mint did experiment with aluminum pennies in 1974, though all were either destroyed, donated to the Smithsonian, or stolen.
Yes, there are pennies worth $2000. A 1974 penny made from aluminum has been estimated between $250,000 and $1,000,000. A 1969 S Double Die Lincoln penny was sold in 2002 for $59,500.
Penny Gold - 1974 is rated/received certificates of: UK:A
A 1974 penny weighs 2.5 grams.
Most likely you have seen a fake. Someone probably electroplated an ordinary 1976 d penny with silver or aluminum. Check its weight. Aluminum is light, less than 1/3rd the density of copper. Compare its weight with a copper penny. If the "aluminum" penny is just as heavy, then it is a electroplated penny. If it is light, then it is a complete fake.
Before 1982, all US 1 cent coins were copper (except steel cents made in WW 2) and a very rare 1974 aluminum penny. After 1982, US 1 cent coins are copper plated zinc. What about 1982- they had both that year? Weigh your coin- if it weighs 3.11 grams, it is copper. If it is 2.5 grams, it is plated zinc.
Throw a Penny was created in 1974-06.
