I had this question on homework 1 for my online political science class.

The textbook said demos means the people and kratis means to rule. The question was multiple choice and I decided this answer was correct. The people rule. It was the one that made the most sense anyways. Hope that helped.

It means rule by the people this is where the word Democracy comes from eventually

It is actually Greek, Demos means people, and Kratia means power. Demokratia is a direct democracy, where the people directly participate in the government, which is different than our actual democracy.
