I'd say none. I started taking photos when i got my first proper camera (an old sony cybershot) and i had no experience at the time. you just develop your skill as you go along, sort of like learning something new, just start experimenting with light and shadow and stuff, that's how i did it =]

If you want to become a good working photographer you should have a good understanding of composition of pictures, understanding of exposure, know how to properly measure and light a scene and subject, and know how to competently set your camera for each condition you are filming in.

This can be a very long answer but I will keep it as brief as possible using bullet points.

  • Take a class on photography

This will help you work closely with others learning and you have the advice from a teacher/professional who will be able to help you troubleshoot later on when you are trying to learn this skill. Photography class also gives you a good idea on history, facts, tips and various other useful facts you wouldn't learn unless working closely with other experienced photographers.

  • Books and reading

There are a number of great books out there that can help one learn about photography and cameras. Your library or local book store would be the best place to look.

  • Decent gear

Photography isn't as pricey as some other skills but there is always an alternative to saving a few extra bucks. If you are responsible and have good credit there are camera stores out there who will let you finance your gear. Used camera's, 35mm or digital are a good way to go, buy from a store with a good reputation. Remember film and developing costs. Digital format is more widely used nowadays and makes learning manual shooting easier and faster than waiting to develop film.

  • Dedication and Practice

No one can learn anything if you don't have the dedication and practice to develop your skill.

  • Business

Most of photography is dealing with clients and working with other people. You will learn that once you have a good foundation on photography the majority of your work will be in business practices that you have with your clients and others. It is also important to be as professional as possible. Have a portfolio with your best work. Less is more sometimes, so be picky with what you use in your portfolio. Your portfolio and professionalism will be the first things your clients judge when they meet you. Have planned out pricing and proper scheduling. Waivers are also very important, property releases and model releases are essential in wanting to do print or stock photography. Copy writing your photos is important too, and its very inexpensive.

  • What kind of photographer do you want to be?

A lot of your experience will be based off of what kind of photography you are interested in getting into. If you want to do wedding photography I would try to become a second shooter or an assistant for an established experienced wedding photographer. If you like Journalistic photography try joining the campus paper or local paper. If you like sports photography attend events and talk to other photographers in the field. You need to talk to other photographers to know whats in, out and about.

The skills and experiences needed to become a photographer varies and is based solely on your actions in what you do, see and learn.

Do most photographers get a degree in photography before they start work?

A degree isn't necessary to do photography for weddings and other events. Many people get a degree, but this is more useful as a job qualification in competitive photography arenas. If you would like to work in fine art, a degree in photography would be useful because you world learn art and photography history, and principles of art. For most photography jobs this isn't necessary. Experience counts most. If you aren't planning to earn a degree there are other ways to get a job as a photographer. Volunteer or start an internship with a photographer. You'll learn how to set up for a shoot, interact with customers, process film, and other practical skills. This kind of experience can help you begin a career as a photographer without a degree.
