His oratory was able to sway the people in fortnightly assembly to follow his preferred course, as the people at large were more easy to sway with emotive appeals. However Thucydides is critical of its subsequent path when Pericles died of the plague and Athens was afflicted with orators who swayed the people into dangerous paths. One of them was when Thucydides himself was sacked as a general for a defeat which was not his fault.
