The biggest threat we present to woodpeckers is loss of habitat, destruction of their habitat.
Woodpeckers attack trees that are infested by insects...that is what they are after. So trees that are less likely to suffer insect infestation are MORE likely to be left undamaged by woodpeckers. I don't know of any tree totally impervious to insects.

Humans are a major factor. I am not an expert, but I can help a little bit. Humans cut down trees that woodpeckers nest in and feed from. Destroying habitats, polluting skies, and killing prey contribute to the demise of the woodpecker.
