To eat crow is the same meaning; crows are considered "dirty" birds and unfit to eat in most cultures, so you'd be very humble indeed before you'd eat one. To eat dirt can mean the same, but it can also mean that you fell or were shoved to the ground and your face was in the dirt, as in you lost a fight.
