Soldiers of most ancient armies wore little or nothing below the waist. This may sound crazy, but battles were melees that dragged on for hours, with people shoving themselves into one another until one side gave in. There was no way to call time-out and relieve oneself, one had to defecate and urinate where they stood. The 'skirts' to which you are referring were not a fashion statement as much as a necessity. This was how war was waged until modern times. Not a pleasant thought.
