There were people that blamed Germany for the start of WWI. This made many souls angry and when the war was done they created the Treaty of Versailles! Germany had no choice but to sign. They were being held at gun point and were told that their nation would be taken over Mexicans if they did not sign. They did not want to see the Mexicans take over their precious territory so they pulled out a fancy feather pen and signed the treaty. Germany became poor as dirt. They were in need of some help so the Nazi Party very graciously came into Germany to solve their problems...THE JEWS. But this was not the answer. The Jews had done nothing wrong. This came to be known as The Holocaust. It just got Germany into even more trouble and they got in a pickle that was difficult to get out of. With lots of help and the death of Hitler Germany slowly got better and became a strong Nation once again.
Germany had to pay for the damages that other countries (in particular France and Belgium) had suffered as a result of the war. Also the reparations were also a way to cripple Germany even more, so they didn't start another war.
First, the Treaty of Versailles placed ALL of the blame for the war on Germany. Germany wasn't even the first country to declare war- they were the third major country, after Austria-Hungary and Russia.
Second, the reparations were seen by Germany as being excessive.
Third, a lot of people, mainly the far right-wing political groups which eventually led to the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, believed in the idea of a "Dolchstoss" ("dagger blow"). They believed that the Germans hadn't lost the war, but that they were betrayed by left-wing and Jewish politicians who had surrendered before Germany actually lost.
Under the Treaty of Versailles (1919), Germany had to pay damages to the Allies, particularly France where most of the fighting occurred and where large regions had been completely devastated. The premise was that because Germany began the war, they were responsible for its effects. Additionally, the victorious Allies wanted to both exact revenge on Germany and to impair their ability to rebuild their military for further aggression. The actual reparations were much smaller than the total stated ($12.5 billion USD of a total $33 billion USD) but still virtually impossible for the postwar German economy. to afford.
After only 2 or 3 years, Germany became unable to pay, despite their concerted purchases of foreign currencies, and in 1923, France seized control of the Ruhr Valley. This further damaged the German economy and exacerbated the hyperinflation of the German mark, as the Weimar Republic printed vast quantities of paper money that had no real chance of redemption. In 1931, Germany suffered a financial collapse that partly fueled the rise of the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler.
