The Devil's Brigade, aka the Black Devils, aka the First Special Service Force, was an elite US-Canadian unit in World War 2. They were created to fight in Norway using a new type of snow vehicle called the Weasel, but they never did. In their first action some of them landed on the island of Kiska only to find that the Japanese had done an uncharacteristic retreat. They later fought in Italy and South France where they quickly developed a reputation as being extremely tough and capable soldiers, and the Germans had a great respect for them. They were composed and specially recruited from tough outdoorsy men on both sides of the US-Canadian border and trained at Helena, WA in demolitions, skiing, and mountaineering. Their leader was Colonel Robert T. Frederick. Other names can be learned from reading the book entitled "The Devil's Brigade" by Robert H. Adleman and George Walton. A movie of the same name was made in 1968, and despite an excellent cast it is a misleading account of who the Devil's Brigade really were.
The Devil's Brigade was organised in 1942.
