Thomas Jefferson kept meticulous hand-written records. He had 187 slaves. A slave named Sally Hemings and her 5 children were freed by Thomas Jefferson either before his death or in his will. These were almost the only slaves which Thomas Jefferson ever freed and the other slaves were sold shortly after he died in order to provide money to pay off some of Jefferson's outstanding debts.

Seven = שבע (SHEH-vah)
The English word "seven" does not come from Hebrew. It comes from Greek via Old English.
During the ninth and eighth centuries BCE, over a period of more than forty years, both Israel and Judah were expansionist, conquering Canaanite cities on the coast, Moab and Edom, as well as other territory. These victories provided an amples supply of slaves for the Hebrew nations. In addition, it appears that there was a practice of capturing lone travellors and selling them as slaves, a practice mirrored in the biblical story of Joseph. Finally, if a debtor failed to meet his payments, his creditor could take him and his family as slaves, subject to the right of release after seven years.
The Emancipation Proclamation freed all American slaves except those in (1) Maryland, Delaware, Missouri , Tennessee, and Kentucky; (2) the counties of Virginia that shortly thereafter became the State of West Virginia; (3) seven other specifically-named counties of Virginia; and (4) New Orleans and 13 specifically-named nearby Louisiana parishes. These exceptions represented states and counties/parishes that were already substantially under Union control on January 1, 1863, the effective date of the Proclamation. By its terms, the Proclamation did not apply to slaves in those areas. Those slaves were freed, not by ratification of the Emancipation Proclamation, but by the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery throughout the United States.
Seven = sheva (שבע)it is traditionally represented with the letter zayin (ז) but in Modern Hebrew, the number 7 is used.
Because there was a labor shortage. Anybody who could get to America had all the land they could possibly want for very low cost, but they could get no one to help them work it. New arrivals could get their own land, so , who would want to be someone else's field hand? There was a partial solution in indentured servants. These were poor people recruited in England to go to the colonies. They did not have the money to pay their way, so someone would pay their passage, in return for which they had to work for that person, usually for seven years. But after the seven years they were free to go their own way and acquire their own land.So, in 1619 when a Dutch ship captain arrived off Jamestown with a cargo of African slaves he had been unable to sell elsewhere and proposed to sell them to the Virginians, it seemed to some like a good idea. Originally these Africans were treated just like the other indentured servants, and freed after seven years. Within a generation or two though the Virginia legislature, and those of other states, had changed laws so that white indentured servants were still freed after seven years but Africans became perpetual servants, never to be freed.
