The violent actions of the Ku Klux Klan were largely done for political purposes against freedmen and their white allies. By the 1880s the tone had shifted to indiscriminate lynching of blacks as a form of oppression and terror.

The hate organization was formed in Tennessee after the US Civil War. It murdered many former slaves. Later, the Klan continued and used murder and terror tactics on Afro-Americans and white supporters of civil rights. The Klan is still in existence, however, it no longer uses the terror and murder tactics of its past. At least to anyone's knowledge. As a political group they have no influence in US politics.
Congress passed many bills to try to stop the KKK, such as a bill to try and prevent the klan from doing violence and trying to protect immigrants and their rights, as well. :)::):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):
