Not by itself. Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory agent and will help with the itching. In conjunction with cold sore medication (acyclovir) will help reduce the length of the infection.

--Original Homeopathic Solutions:

No. A cold sore is a viral infection, and hydrocortisone is for fungal or yeast infections. if you have a cold sore, use a cream specifically for that, or many people have found relief using tea tree oil applied several times a day to the area. Tea Tree oil is a natural remedy found in health stores and drug stores.

Hydrocortisone is only used as a topical ointment to stop itching. It can be used to stop the itching of the pox, however, it does not get rid of the spots or help your body get over the illness sooner. Calamine lotion, an oatmeal bath, or other ointments work well for relieving the itching as well.

Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflamitory cream, it may help with swelling and itching but it won't do much to help heal the blisters by itself. You would have to mix it with an antiviral medication or antiviral cream. The antiviral attacks the virus that causes fever blisters and helps prevent it from reproducing. Used together they can help reduce the healing time and they can help prevent the cold sore from becomming a seriou ulceration or infected.

No. Because hydrocortisone suppresses the immune system, it might delay healing.

That may not be very effective on cold sores. Cold sores are caused by a virus. You should use cream like abreva, lysine, or talk to your doctor about antiviral medication.

Is hydrocortisone oinment usp2.5 percent used for fever blisters and cold sores?

Yes you can but an antiviral should also be used. Hydrocortisone by itself doesn't do much for cold sores, it's an anti-inflamitory cream. It may help with the symptoms and swelling but antivirals will attack the virus that causes cold sores and fever blisters to help prevent it from reproducing in other cells.
