Absolutely not.

Not today. Many years ago, planes used to have a smoking section at the rear of the plane for anyone who wanted to smoke during the flight. Some older plane like the Boeing 707 and 727 and the Douglas DC-9 still have ash trays in the seat arm rests. But smoking is absolutely not tolerated on planes anymore. If I'm correct, the last time this was allowed was in the 1970s or early 1980s. ---------------------

I flew on Varig in 1996 from L.A. to Sao paulo and the whole back section of the plane was smoking. The smoke got filtered I think because the plane was not smokey.

Up until the late 80's and early 90's planes had smoking sections on planes. This was a joke because the air is recirculated and has no place to go. I remember once being the first seat behind the smoking sections. I choked my way to where I was going. I think person who thought this up was the same joker who thought of smoking sections in restaurants was a good idea. The problem is that smoke doesn't know that it is suppose to stay in one area.

There is no law or safety regulation that prohibits it. However it is the policy of all American carriers and most of the larger international carriers to prohibit all smoking on their aircraft.

That being said, some of the smaller Asian and African airlines still allow smoking.

Also, smoking is still allowed on most charter aircraft.
