Dried fruit will in the end also decompose, otherwise you could eat it forever. But to help the process along, water is an important element. If you throw a few pieces of dried fruit in a barrel with other organic matter, the water contained in that matter will already do the trick. In a barrel with only dried fruit, adding some water might be useful.
