Not necessarily=- the decline in religious callings has led, or in some case forced the hiring of lay teachers in many Church schools. Brothers ( in a sense ecclesiastical Non-Coms ranking between laymen and Priests- are frequently employed in such roles as teachers, camp counselors, athletic instructors- in short many youth contact roles. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart operated a Camp I attended in New Jersey in l968. Do not confuse with the motion picture ( Brothers In Blood) which would be rated at least PG-l3 and was mistakenly shown at the camp theatre- maybe the guy in charge of film distribution intended this as a practical joke! that"s another story. Priests and Brothers form the faculty in many church schools that are all male. as late as l967 there was a strict gender-line in religious instruction - at the confirmation level- boys and girls were completely segregated- and Girls taught by nuns, Boys by Brothers and/or priests. This was totally ( on board) and there was no measurable resistance.

Are Catholic nuns salaries paid by the Catholic Church?

You are a little confused. Catholic nuns are cloistered and do no work outside of their monastery. The women that you see that teach, nurse, work in parishes are Sisters (although they are commonly referred to as nuns, they are not). All nuns AND Sisters take a vow of poverty when they are fully professed and may not receive any salary. Any salary that their Order mayreceive is paid for by whatever institute they that work for: the hospital, the parish, the school, etc. There is no "Catholic Church" institute, only particular Churches which are individual Bishops and their dioceses.
