yes and no. well because some coyotes are not the sharpest tool in the shed,but yes because they are technically related to the "dog family." so it really depends on perspective you look at it.
Nature or Nurture question. Coyotes grownup in the wild often out maneuver humans or dogs trained to run them down. From pups on, it was a matter of survival.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no peer-reviewed, double-blind studies comparing wild coyotes even to the doggie IQ scale. I grew up around them and am a 30+ year trainer. They are certainly not the dim bulb on the string. From observed behavior, probably around the Belgium Malinois (a few steps down the scale from the German Shepherd). Very clever animals.
