Fossil fuels include oil formed out of organic matter deposited and decomposed under the earth's surface for a very long time.
Some of the advantages of oil are -
* Easily combustible, and produces high energy upon combustion helping in locomotion and in the generation of electricity and various other forms of energy;
* Widely and easily distributed all over the world through rail and sea tankers * Comparatively inexpensive due to large reserves and easy accessibility * Good availability * Inexpensive
* Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using oil, fairly cheaply.
* Oil-fired power stations are very efficient.
* An oil-fuelled power station can be built almost anywhere, so long as you can get large quantities of fuel to it.
However, the important issue as of now is whether there are more advantages than disadvantages of fossil fuels !
Some disadvantages of oil are that -
* it is non-renewable and fast depleting; * burning it releases carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas, that had been stored in the earth for millions of years
* it leaves behind harmful by-products upon combustion, thereby causing a lot of pollution; * mining of oil leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment; * Oil spills as well as evaporation and fumes pollutes the environment; * Used oil is difficult to recycle. * The price of oil is rising, especially if the real cost of its carbon is included. * Burning it produces carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming.
=== === The basic problem with coal and other carbon based fuels in not really that they release carbon-- it is that the carbon they release is not then quickly and efficiently absorbed by some other process, eliminating it from the atmosphere. We are taking unimaginably huge quantities of carbon, stored away for eons, and pouring it into the air. It will remain there for eons more, until the earth goes through more of its own balancing cycles. http://sciencedata.blogspot.com/

Disadvantages - any man-made structure or service, not just those associated with the oil industry, can be attacked by criminals.
"Some fractions poisonous" - yes they are, but so are some metals and a huge range of materials more directly derived from plants and animals.
Oil is a fossil fuel formed out of organic matter deposited and decomposed under the earth's surface for millions of years.

Some disadvantages of oil are:
Disadvantages of oil: Dependence on oil can have geopolitical impacts, for example the risk of disruptions to supply. As with coal, burning oil results in emission of carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect. Compared to burning natural gas, oil produces more carbon dioxide, since gas is converted partly into carbon dioxode and partly into water.

Oil
Good= 1. It is a natural resource 2. Easy to use
Bad = 1. Oil spills 2. Gas from oil pollutes the air
i guess it's how you look at it. To me, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The advantages of oil, to me, is gas for our cars, heat in our houses, lubrication for multiple types of engines, generators, gears, etc.. Unfortunately all of those things have made us too dependent on oil and the companies who make it. Oil companies have almost single handedly caused inflation. Their greed affects the prices of everything we purchase due to the fact that without their oil nothing could be transported, automobiles, aircraft, locomotives, and barges couldn't operate. Our homes would be too hot, or too cold. They know this, and every time they rise their prices all other corporations must follow or they wouldn't make it. Hope that this answer helped you in some way.
The advantage of oil is its efficiency, as it is easily combustible and can be used in a variety or processes. The disadvantages of oil are it is environmentally unfriendly, the demand and supply of oil, and its cost and distribution.
It can have oil spills which destroys ecosystems, kills marine life, isn't good for the environment. It also produces carbon dioxide when oil is being burnt. Also, it is higly toxic.
emulsifier. Also, a device that removes oil from water, or water from oil - depending upon its application.
Advantages: Increases domestic energy production, reduces dependence on foreign oil, creates jobs, boosts the economy. Disadvantages: Risk to the environment, potential for oil spills and pollution, disruption to local ecosystems and communities, contributes to climate change.
Coal has only one advantage relative to oil, which is that it is abundant and relatively inexpensive. Disadvantages include, it is more polluting (due to impurities in the coal) and it is harder to handle; oil can be pumped, whereas coal has to be shoveled. Coal mining is often more difficult and dangerous than pumping oil out of the ground. Coal dust creates the dangers of explosion, and black lung disease.

Mercury has no disadvantages . . . if it were a sentient being, it would be quite at ease.
