Germany, Austria and - in the end - the Ottoman Empire as the so-called "Axis" countries on the one side, and the Russian Empire, France and Britain and in the end the US and Italy as the "Allied" countries. Other countries were unwillingly involved because they were overrun or because their country became a battlefield, like Belgium.
It is called the first "world' war because technically, all the warring countries' many colonies and posessions were automatically involved in the war as well. The name "World War 1" is by the way a later invention: at the time and until after 1940/1945 it was called - and sometimes still is, especially in Great Britain - the Great War. To give you an idea of all the countries/colonies technically if not actively involved in WW 1, here is the complete list. It's seperated by continent/area :

At the beginning of World War I, the US assumed an isolationist policy which basically means that we refused to get involved. While remaining isolationist, the US tried to get the other countries involved to declare peace.
when Americans got involved in WW2In world war 2, Americans got involved right after the Japanese attacked pearl harbor. AnswerPearl Harbor.
World War II was the most destructive war in human history, first of all, because of the number of nations involved. Nations on nearly every continent took part, and its conflicts were waged on most of the world's land, seas, and air spaces. Another cause of the great destruction was the sophistication of the weapons involved, which never before had been utilized in war.
here are a list of civil wars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_civil_wars and here's a list of wars of independence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Independence For countries that had both a war of independence and a civil war I would say that America and Ireland would be most notable. Along with many south and central American countries including Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala.
