They can survive on there own, if they go wandering off on there own they can still survive but they have to be extra careful of predators. Also they have no one else to groom them when they are alone so they can not get rid of things like ticks. A meerkat has a very low chance of survival alone, They get very cold in the night alone. They are usually abandoned by there family for breeding when they are not the alpha female. They usually can't survive very long alone.

Yes, meerkats do stay together. They need to so if they run into an enemy they can team up on it and has a pretty good chance it will kill it.
