It is a small computer inside the dashborad, almos behind the head light switch, it contros wiper blades, and some electrical thing of the Jeep, it also stores the the vehicles mileage history, changing this will change your odometer reading.
when you open the hood of your 1991 Jeep cherokee, look at the right side fender( drivers side) you will see a black box mounted to the fender well behing and next to the air box,. that is the Electronic Control Module ( ECM). I hope this helps.
