The original London was burned down in the Great Fire of London in 1666 and virtually nothing remains of it. The area has been rebuilt several times from then on and was decimated again in 1940/41 during the Blitz. The original 'Square Mile' is now occupied by new office buildings and is the main financial district of London. It is known as the 'City of London' and is a city within a city with its own Lord Mayor and Police Force which is totally independent of the police service in the rest of London. The 'City of London Corporation' is able to raise its own taxes independently of the rest of London. There are hardly any people living within the boundaries of 'The City' and the office workers commute daily from other parts of London and beyond.
