The King of Malaysia, or more commonly known as the "Yang di-Pertuan Agong" is rotated every 5 years among 9 Rulers from the Malay states. The current Yang di-Pertuan Agong is Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, the Sultan of Terengganu.

Malaysia is a democratic country with a parliamentary system. The 6th and current Prime Minister is Najib Razak, whose father Tun Abdul Razak was the 2nd Prime Minister. There is also a constitutional monarchy. The current "Yang Di-Pertuan Agong" is Tuanku Abdul Halim. This system is modelled after the UK's system, since Malaysia was once its colony.

A unique point of the monarchy is that it is rotational. There are nine state royal rulers, i.e. Sultan/Raja. There are 4 states who do not have royal leaders - but this would be too much information. In turns, the 9 are elected to the highest post of Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which they can hold for five years. They sort of take turns holding the post - beginning from the state Negeri Sembilan, then Selangor, then Perlis and so on, until in returns to Negeri Sembilan. The nine will hold a conference to "vote" for the next leader. This would mean that they can actually reject the next-in-turn if they feel he is not befitting to the post. This has never happened, however, and thus it is more of a ceremonial thing. In the event of the end of term, or death, of the Agong, the next-in-turn will be elected. While being Agong, the state he came from will have a temporal new "ruler", which would be his heir.

The current Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim, is the only King so far to have been on the throne twice - his first term was during 1970.

Three elective monarchies exist today. The pope of the Roman Catholic Church (who rules as Sovereign of the Vatican City State) is elected to a life term by the College of Cardinals. In Malaysia, the federal king, called the Yang di-Pertuan Agong ("Paramount Ruler") is elected for a five-year term from and by the hereditary rulers (mostly sultans) of nine of the federation's constitutivestates, all on the Malay peninsula. The United Arab Emirates also has a procedure for electing its monarch.
