Woodchester is a major Romano-British villa in the Cotswolds near Stroud (Glos.). It originated on a small scale in the 2nd cent. By the first half of the 4th cent. it consisted of at least three courts in echelon. The principal range of the inner court contained a huge reception room, floored with the largest mosaic in Roman Britain, depicting Orpheus and the beasts.
Woodchester is a Gloucestershire village in the Nailsworth (or Woodchester) Valley, a valley in the South Cotswolds in England, running southwards from Stroud along the A46 road to Nailsworth.
Woodchester is approximately at the mid-point, approximately two miles south of Stroud. It is divided into North and South Woodchester, with a side valley between the two settlements. There are pubs and post offices with a shop in each. Woodchester is notable as the location of Woodchester Roman Villa.[1] The village's parish church of St Mary's was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon.
Woodchester is home to the Bottle Green Drinks Co, established by Kit and Shireen Morris in 1989 to make Cotswold spring-water based soft drinks and cordials using their expertise as winemakers, and now a brand name recognised around the UK and the World.
The nearby Woodchester Mansion is regularly open to the public and stands in a landscaped valley. This valley is now owned by the National Trust and is open daily. There are three waymarked walks. The car park is at Nympsfield near Coaley Peak, not at Woodchester as some visitors suppose.
