She died in Connecticut in l968., the funeral was somewhat hush hushy. the body was eventually cremated and her ashes placed in Washington Cathedral. She was believed to have professed the Swedenborgian faith. The large bronze statue of her in an Alabama graveyard is in effect a centotaph, she is not buried there. As far as I know there was no post-mortem examination which could have shed light on her various handicaps and adaptations- and perhaps... better left unsaid.

This was considered a (national) hoor to a national heroine or celebrity. Helen"s body was cremated and her ashes placed in a niche alongside those of her Teacher Annie Sullivan Macy, and another urn containing the remains of Polly Thompson, one of her longtime guides and traveling companions. Miss Keller was of the Swedenborgian religion and the Washington Cathedral is of the Episcopalian denomination. Perhaps the Swedenborgians do not have any cemetery or similar facilities in Washington. It was originally intended that she be taken to Tuscumbia for burial in a local cemetery. There is a statue 9Bronze, very well done) of her in a cemetery that is, alas a cenotaph, not an actual tomb site. Some Blind charity did a very subdued voiced under commercial showing this cemetery in the late sixties, early seventies but did not mention that Helen is not interrred there.
