Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) in Utah faced many hardships. The climate and terrain were very rough, making both travel and basic survival difficult. They shared the land with Native Americans, which sometimes were friendly and peaceful but other times were hostile. The US Government was suspicious of them and sent the army to keep an eye on them. Some years the crops did not do very well, meaning they nearly starved to death over the winter. They also dealt with issues stemming from the fact that they were so far removed from society. Having any supplies shipped from the east was extremely expensive, so the Mormons had to learn to make the best of what they had, often this meant making their own cloth and using wood pegs or leather straps rather than nails.
