Yes. You should be able to use an AMD Turion 64 in any Socket 754 motherboard.

depends what its in the turion is a mobile processor so if ur gettin a laptop get the turion, if ur gettin a desktop get the athlon

AMD have added performance-per-watt as one of their competitive benchmarks ° still a big step below the alter of high performance, but at least the parameter is now in the cathedral. The testing and writing took several weeks. Turion 64s work on many desktop socket 754 motherboards. Not many people realize that the Turion 64 can also be used in this way. In fact, it doesn't even require a special motherboard ° many Socket 754 boards that support desktop processors can also run Turions. The effect of the optimizations is to reduce the maximum potential clock speed that the Turion 64 can support; clock for clock, there should be no difference. The effect of the slower transistors can be seen in the range of clock speeds for each processor: 1.6 ~ 2.4 GHz for Turion 64 chips, and 1.8 ~ 2.8 GHz for Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX chips. In theory, the regular Athlon 64 chips should be better overclockers than the Turion 64 chips.

All major laptop manufacturers incorporate 64 bit chips into their newer computers, any laptop with an Athlon 64, Turion 64, or Intel Core or Core 2 series processors are 64 bit.

Turion 64 is based on Athlon 64's architecture, and the main difference between Turion 64 and Athlon 64 Mobile is
the power consumption, which is lower on Turion 64: Athlon 64 Mobile dissipates 65 W while Turion 64 dissipates only
35 W (ML models) or 25 W (MT models). Another difference between them is the amount of L2 cache, which is always of 1 MB
on Athlon 64 Mobile, while Turion 64 can have a L2 memory cache of 512 KB or 1 MB, depending on the model
In addition - Athlon was developed mainly for desktop and turion for laptops Answer
Overall Athlon range is economy version and has less performance compared to Turion which are relatively high end processors. Although initially Athlon name was used only for desktop processors, later both Turion and Athlon brands have been used for dual core processors designed for notebook computers. Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core processor family is AMD's most advanced family of dual-core processors made for mobility to date. Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor family is a more affordable relatively lower performance range of processors for notebook PCs. Exact specification and performance numbers depends on the model number of the processor in respective families.

It depends if they have the same socket or not, which they usually don't. It also depends if your motherboard supports it or not. Check the manual and it should have a list of supported processors and speeds. This also depends if your laptop allows you to change the processor. Some are soldered on.

The Turion series is designed for laptops, and thus consumes less power while producing less heat, the Athlon series is a desktop class processor, and thus consumes more power and produces more heat. For a laptop, I would recommend the Turion, but the Athlon will be slightly faster at the expense of very poor battery life.
1 answer
Not unless you replace the entire motherboard. Intel and AMD processors use different sockets and different chipsets.

In terms of raw performance, an equally priced Turion will outperform a Celeron.

Turion for the fact that Turions' are energy efficient so you can go longer on the same battery charge compared to a phenom.

Is this a good gaming computer, or sould i buy a new one?

No. The eMachines e627 will only physically accept an S1 socket processor. The Athlon X2 is an AM2 socket processor. You will need to go with an AMD Turion X2. And even then some Turion X2 processors may not be supported by the BIOS. The AMD Turion X2 TL-50 should be supported and should be free of heat issues as the dual core version of this laptop was shipped with this processor. I have read of users successfully upgrading to the AMD Turion X2 TL-58 and TL-64 without issue. However, that is not first hand knowledge on my part. I have the same laptop with the single core TL-20 and am about to upgrade to the TL-64.

No. The laptop was designed for single core Intel processors.

Windows 7 is capable of running on any x86 or x86-64 compatible processor that runs at at least 1 GHz. This includes late-model Pentium IIIs, Pentium 4s, Core, Core 2, Pentium Dual-Core, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, Xeon, Athlon XP, Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, Phenom, Turion, and Opteron processors.

Turion.
The sempron is, i believe single core and that for me counts it right out. advantages of the LE sempy are its low energy useage- ideal for a back up PC or other unit that's left on 24/7, other than that go for the Turion. I take it this is for a laptop choice?
1 answer
Yes.
AMD Turion is made for moblie/laptop copmputers. AMD Athlon has had mobile versions, but most of them are made for desktop computers. AMD Turion CPUs put out less heat than AMD Athlons (at the same speed) and there are some motherboards that do support them, but not all.
If you want the CPU for a dektop computer, unless you know that the Turion is supported, Athlon is the CPU you want. Almost all laptops are sold 'preassembled' and as such you have no choice of what CPU is in the box (apart from the model/speed chosen).

Each of these names refers to a different line of chips with different architecture. .
The Core 2 is the latest from Intel and currently holds the lead on performance and performance-per-watt for consumers.
The Core was the short-lived successor to the Pentium M line of low-power mobile CPUs.
The Pentium D was a stop-gap solution to AMD's dominance in dual-core processors, superseded by the current Core 2 line.
The Turion 64 X2 is AMD's line of dual-core mobile processors directly competing with Intel's Core and Core 2 mobile lines.
.
What the guy above said is pretty much your answer. The same goes for Desktop processors too.
You can think of core 2 duos as the true successor to the pentium dual cores really, dispite the couple of less popular models in between. They operate similar but faster and better thanks to their improved archtecture. The AMD x2 chips are dual core chips from intels rival AMD. They usually have less cache than the equivelent intel pentium chip but can in most cases hold their own against their rival. AMDs are usually a little cheaper to replace too. Though Pentium chips usually perform a little better when involved with any kind of file or audio / video compression or encoding.
Most laptops containing pentium dual cores will be upgradable to a core 2 duo as the socket is the same. My Laptop has a pentium dual core in it and it is pretty nifty.
Just dont get a celeron if you dont want a slow machine.

Depends on what their Clock Speed Is, Clock Speed Is measured in GHz, the higher the number the better the processor.
For Instance an Intel Core 2 Duo could have a clock speed of 2.00 GHz and that would be better than a AMD Turion Clock speed of 1.73 GHz.

It will depend on the exact processor model number. There are many processors in Turion and Core2Duo series with varying specifications. Core2Duo processors with similar specs outperforms Turion and Athlon in most benchmarks. AMD processors are overall cheaper.
