The first underground railway in the U.S. was the trolley tunnel that opened in Boston in 1897 (the Tremont Street Subway). Rapid transit (subway) trains began using the Tremont Street Subway in 1901.

It's pretty easy. Take the Uptown 2 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to the East Tremont Avenue/West Farms Square stop (that's the next stop after 174th Street).
