Tori Spelling

, Actor / Celebrity Relative

  • Born: 16 May 1973
  • Birthplace: Los Angeles, California
  • Best Known As: Donna Martin on Beverly Hills 90210

Tori Spelling's fame comes from her family name as well as from her various TV acting roles. Her father, Aaron Spelling, was the TV superproducer behind hits like The Love Boat and Dynasty. He added Tori to the cast of his 1990s teen hit Beverly Hills 90210, where she played the shy-but-blossoming Donna Martin from 1990-2000. She became a tabloid favorite due to a heady combination of cosmetic surgeries, relationship troubles, fan attacks on her acting skills, and (after her father's 2006 death) squabbles with her mother, Candy. Spelling's films include The House of Yes (1997, with Parker Posey), Scream 2 (1997) and Kiss the Bride (2007). She married Dean McDermott in 2006. That same year they began co-starring in the cable TV "reality" series Tori and Dean: Inn Love (later Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood).

She has two children with McDermott: Liam (born in 2007) and Stella (b. 2008)... She was married to Charlie Shanian from 2004-2006... Her character, Donna Martin, was married in the 2000 finale of Beverly Hills 90210... Spelling and McDermott ran a bed and breakfast called Chateau La Rue in Fallbrook, California in 2006; it was the basis for their reality show Tori and Dean: Inn Love. They closed the inn in 2008 and their show shifted back to Hollywood.

Biography

A scion of one of the most powerful television families in Hollywood and a repeatedly maligned starlet, Tori Spelling spent years in television purgatory before finally getting respect for her acting in films such as The House of Yes and Trick. Weathering assorted rumors and attacks on her acting and appearance, Spelling has proven that, while nepotism may provide a convenient entrance into Hollywood, endurance and a sense of humor are necessities for long-term survival.

Born Victoria Davey Spelling on May 16, 1973, Spelling made her Hollywood debut in 1989, first with a small role in (appropriately enough) Troop Beverly Hills and then on the TV sitcom Saved by the Bell. In 1990, Spelling was cast in the role that would make her famous, that of Donna on Beverly Hills 90210. With fame came the widespread speculation the Spelling was hired because of her father's position as producer of the show, although Aaron Spelling claimed this was not the case. Whether truth or fiction, the allegations kicked off a series of unfavorable comments made about Spelling over the next few years, comments that were hardly made better by the dubious television programs in which she was repeatedly cast.

1997 marked a change in direction for Spelling's career. With 90210 in decline, she started acting in films, appearing in the small but well-respected The House of Yes and in Scream 2, in which she poked fun at her image with her appearance as herself. A further sign that she was gaining positive attention was her casting in Trick (1999), a critically acclaimed film that took a lighthearted and unconventional look at gay love and lust in the 1990s. With Sundance credibility firmly in hand, Spelling finally appeared ready to move forward and leave her image as a 90210 casualty behind her. ~ Rebecca Flint, All Movie Guide

Victoria Davey "Tori" Spelling (born May 16, 1973) is an American actress. She is best known for being Aaron Spelling's daughter and for her role as Donna Martin in the 1990s teen soap opera Beverly Hills, 90210.

Biography

Early life

Spelling was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Candy Marer (born Carole Gene Marer[1]) and famed TV producer Aaron Spelling. Both of Spelling's parents were Jewish,[2] though her family celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah while she was growing up.[3] She attended Beverly Hills High School in Beverly Hills, California but graduated from Harvard-Westlake School. Her brother, Randy Spelling, is an actor as well.

Career

Guest roles (mostly in her father's shows) such as The Love Boat, T.J. Hooker, Hotel, Fantasy Island, Vega$, and Saved by the Bell before landing a regular part in Beverly Hills 90210, a series co-produced by her father, Darren Star and Spelling Television.

Since 90210 went off the air, Spelling has worked primarily on independent films including Trick and The House of Yes. She also has appeared in small roles in big budget films, including Scream 2 and Scary Movie 2, and in TV shows, including Smallville.

More recently, Spelling has been the star of two reality-based shows. In 2006, she starred in the VH1 celebreality sitcom So NoTORIous, which parodied her public image. In January 2007, she and her second husband, the actor Dean McDermott, leased a bed & breakfast in Fallbrook, California (a rural community about 100 miles from Los Angeles, 50 miles from San Diego and just south of Temecula wine country). This became the basis of a new reality show, Tori & Dean: Inn Love, which premiered on the Oxygen network on March 20, 2007.[4]

The Village News of Fallbrook, California, has reported that Spelling did not actually purchase the inn.[5]

Personal life

On July 3, 2004, Spelling married Charlie Shanian. They separated in December 2005 and were legally divorced on April 20, 2006. Spelling married her second husband, McDermott a month later, on May 7, 2006, in a barefoot ceremony in Fiji. The two met when they co-starred in the TV movie Mind Over Murder.[6] McDermott's former wife, Mary Jo Eustace, who he divorced to marry Spelling, has since written about the experience as part of the anthology The Other Woman.[7] McDermott and Eustace have two children: Jack Montgomery (b. October 10, 1998) and Lola (b. July 27, 2005).

During an appearance at the 2006 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto on June 18th, Spelling was asked if she found it better dating a Canadian. Spelling replied "...they are much nicer and have nasty ex-wives who write tell-all books". In December 2006, Spelling stated that she wanted to write her memoir, to be published by Simon & Schuster in the spring of 2008.[8]

After her father's death on June 23, 2006, Spelling was anticipated to inherit a sizable portion of her father's $300 million estate. The estate was to be divided primarily between Spelling, her brother and her mother Candy. Spelling's mother was the estate executor. At the time, Spelling and her mother were estranged and it was reported that Spelling inherited just $800,000.[9] Her brother, who was not estranged from his mother, also received $800,000.[9]

Spelling gave birth to her first child, Liam Aaron McDermott (Aaron, for her deceased father) on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 in Los Angeles. Spelling said she and her mother had recently reconciled. Reportedly, her mother was in the delivery room when Spelling gave birth. It has been reported that Candy Spelling has established a $10 million trust fund for her first grandchild. [10]

Spelling has recently been ordained as a minister over the internet. She has, by her own account, presided over five same-sex marriages.
