If I recall correctly, the first Don was Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando). From there, I believe that Santino "Sonny" Corleone (played by James Cahn) was the second Don for a very short time. The final Don was Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino). I hope that helps.

...Now to go along with the story there is a lot of give and take. In the book after Sonny's death Sandra moved to Florida to live with her family. But the book also says that Lucy Mancini never had a child and was sent to live in Las Vegas as the Familie's guest.
So with two of his sons in Florida, way from the family business and Vincent rejoining his uncle Michael in hopes of progressing through the family business, naturally it was Vincent who would take over the family
