You don't. Good writers don't use synonyms for "he said" or "she said." Writing "he gasped" or "she shuddered" detracts from the writing and jerks the reader out of the story. Instead, show the character gasping.
For example, you might write "Her mouth fell open and she couldn't catch her breath."

The sentence, 'He was happy to see her', is NOT very descriptive. Descriptive language includes action verbs and engages the senses: seeing, hearing, touch, etc.
Examples of descriptive language that infers the idea of 'was happy' include::

Jim shuddered at the sight of his first love.
The soldier wept joyfully to see his children after a year in Afghanistan.

In "The Lovely Bones," author Alice Sebold uses the technique of personification extensively. Yes, Stephanie Meyer does mention fangs, in the third book "Eclipse". Page 218.
It was just after someone had been in Bella's room and Jacob came to visit. Then Jacob was curious about something. This is what it goes like :
' "I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything - I'm honestly curious," Jacob assured me.
"Fine. Go ahead."
He paused for half a second. "What's it like - having a vampire for a boyfriend?"
I rolled my eyes. "It's the best."
"I'm serious. The idea doesn't bother you - it never creeps you out?"
"Never."
He was silent as he reached for the bowl in my hands. I peeked up at his face - he was frowning, his lower lip jutting out.
"Anything else?" I asked.
He wrinkled his nose again. "Well... I was wondering... do you... y'know, kiss him?"
I laughed. "Yes."
He shuddered. "Ugh."
"To each her own," I murmured.
"You don't worry about the fangs?"
I smacked his arm, splashing him with dishwater. "Shut up, Jacob! You know he doesn't have fangs!"
"Close enough," he muttered.
So there you go, Stephanie Meyer does mention the word fangs in the twilight saga. (: x

Article from The Last Olympian
As we passed the commons area a fight broke between the Ares and Apollo cabin. Some Apollo campers armed with firebombs flew over the Ares cabin in a chariot pulled my two pegasi.
I'd never seen their chariot but it looked like a pretty sweet ride. Soon the roof of the Ares cabin was burning, naiads rushed over with water to put out the fire.
The Ares campers called down a curse, and the arrows of the Apollo campers turned to rubber. They kept shooting arrows but they kept bouncing off.
Two archers ran by, chased by a Ares kid who was yelling in poetry: "Curse me eh? I'll make you pay/ I don't want to rhyme all day!"
Annabeth sighed. "Not that again. The last time Apollo cursed a cabin, it took a week for the ryhming couplets to wear off."
I shuddered. Apollo was the good of poetry as well as archery, and I heard him recite in person. I'd almost rather get shot by an arrow.
"What are they fighting about anyway?" I asked.
Annabeth ignored my while she scribbled on her inspection scroll both giving each cabin a one out of five.
I found myself staring at her, which was stupid since i'd seen her a billion times.

This is speculation but I've just gone through something that tought me something about my 2002 ZTS related to rough idleing and acceleration. Even when I purchased my Car with 12,000 miles, I noticed at idle it ran kind of rough at idle and shuddered just a bit sometimes. It didn't do bad during acceleration or average operating so I just figured that was how it ran. It still ran similarly at 100,000 when I decided to change plugs. When I pulled those plugs that I figure were original plugs I was suprised at a couple of things. One, at the factory they mixed 2 double platinum plugs with 2 single platinum (the doubles were stopped mfg by motorcraftafter a while but I would not think mixing the two was a good idea). Second, the gaps on all 4 were all way out of wack. They were supposed to all be .050 and I would have expected some wear but they were .057, .065, .067, .052. And when I replaced those with 4 new single platinums all gapped correctly at .050 it now runs like a top, smooth as a kitten, better than it ever has. I can't believe I ran it that whole time with those bad gappings so try checking the plug gaps and/or replaced the plugs. In my case I suspect the computer was adjusting for the issues to make it run OK but it really hums now, smooth and more power, gas mileage better too.

It would be a big help if the person receiving the tutoring had a goal in life that tutoring could help them reach, perhaps they have a dream job or something like that.
I wasn't too bad at school but I think I could have done better had I known more about myself. I'm going to be doing A levels soon (UK qualification) to get where I want to be, if I were to do A levels the first time round I probably would have given up because I wouldn't have known where I'd be ending up after the exams. A lot of people will do things they don't really want to do to reach a goal in life.
Equally this person doesn't actually need to like tutoring if a system is set up in which they are rewarded for taking part in tutoring, you could say every time they get a certain score on a test or attend this many sessions a week they get some form of reward; something like more free time or a trip to somewhere they especially enjoy.
Make sure all their academic achievements are greatly praised and recognised by their family and friends. If this person feels they're impressing those around them by achieving greatly then they will continue with tutoring to create more praise towards themselves.
Years ago I would have shuddered at the idea of tutoring, but recently I have requested a tutor for myself to teach me another language for when I move country (part of the dream job/goal). I hope it comforts you to know that younger people often grow out of a resistance to being educated.
I hope this person has a good relationship with themselves and their tutor and I wish you all the best. It gets much easier.

"You look like a general who's planning a battle with his chief of the staff."
Over the green squares of the fields and the low curve of a wood there rose in the distance a grey, melancholy hill, with a strange jagged summit, dim and vague in the distance, like some fantastic landscape in a dream.
A steep curve of heath-clad land, an outlying spur of the moor, lay in front of us. On the summit, hard and clear like an equestrian statue upon its pedestal, was a mounted soldier, dark and stern, his rifle poised ready over his forearm.
Somewhere there, on that desolate plain, was lurking this fiendish man, hiding in a burrow like a wild beast, his heart full of malignancy against the whole race which had cast him out.
Baskerville shuddered as he looked up the long, dark drive to where the house glimmered like a ghost at the farther end.

One of the most important points is to understand that many people fled to America to escape persecution and religious wars in Europe. The Founders very much kept this in mind while constructing the Constitution. They sought to prevent another series of massacres, religious wars, and feuds over papal control like the ones that dominated history from the beginning of the Early Middle Ages to the Thirty Years' War (roughly 700 years or so of death in the name of state-imposed religion and power struggles). Therefore, The Bill of Rights not only enforces guidelines for proper government behavior, it is a means for protecting minority rights from majority oppression, otherwise known as mob rule. For example, the First Amendment's Freedom of Religion is not only a freedom for one to worship as they choose, but it also protects their right not to worship at all, if that is their thing. So, the point being, there is to be no official religion that would relight nationalistic religious fever, and the witch hunts and chaos that often follows. The same applies for every other aspect of the Bill of Rights as well. I believed the Founding Fathers would have shuddered at the thought of having a government invade in a person's privacy and home without a justified reason for doing so (ahem, Patriot Act). Therefore, the minority's rights to liberty, in theory, should be protected from whatever majority is in charge of the government, or from the actual government itself.

The correct name is:
How The Kiwi Lost Its Wings
The story goes thus:
One day, Tanemahuta was walking through the forest. He looked up at his children reaching for the sky and he noticed that they were starting to sicken, as bugs were eating them.
He talked to his brother, Tanehokahoka, who called all of his children, the birds of the air together.
Tanemahuta spoke to them.
"Something is eating my children, the trees. I need one of you to come down from the forest roof and live on the floor, so that my children can be saved, and your home can be saved. Who will come?"
All was quiet, and not a bird spoke.
Tanehokahoka turned to Tui.
"E Tui, will you come down from the forest roof?"
Tui looked up at the trees and saw the sun filtering through the leaves. Tui looked down at the forest floor and saw the cold, dark earth and shuddered.
"Kao, Tanehokahoka, for it is too dark and I am afraid of the dark."
Tanehokahoka turned to Pukeko.
"Pukeko, will you come down from the forest roof?"
Pukeko looked down at the forest floor and saw the cold, damp earth and shuddered.
"Kao, Tanehokahoka, for it is too damp and I do not want to get my feet wet."
All was quiet, and not a bird spoke.
Tanehokahoka turned to Pipiwharauroa.
"Pipiwharauroa, will you come down from the forest roof?"
Pipiwharauroa looked up at the trees and saw the sun filtering through the leaves. Pipiwharauroa looked around and saw his family.
"Kao, Tanehokahoka, for I am busy at the moment building my nest."
All was quiet, and not a bird spoke. And great was the sadness in the heart of Tanehokahoka, for he knew, that if one of his children did not come down from the forest roof, not only would his brother loose his children, but the birds would have no home.
Tanehokahoka turned to Kiwi.
"E kiwi, will you come down from the forest roof?"
Kiwi looked up at the trees and saw the sun filtering through the leaves. Kiwi looked around and saw his family. Kiwi looked at the cold damp earth. Looking around once more, he turned to Tanehokahoka and said,
"I will."
Great was the joy in the hearts of Tanehokahoka and Tanemahuta, for this little bird was giving them hope. But Tanemahuta felt that he should warn kiwi of what would happen.
"E kiwi, do you realise that if you do this, you will have to grow thick, strong legs so that you can rip apart the logs on the ground and you will loose your beautiful coloured feathers and wings so that you will never be able to return to the forest roof. You will never see the light on day again."
All was quiet, and not a bird spoke.
"E kiwi, will you come down from the forest roof?"
Kiwi took one last look at the sun filtering through the trees and said a silent goodbye. Kiwi took one last look at the other birds, their wings and their coloured feathers and said a silent goodbye. Looking around once more, he turned to Tanehokahoka and said,
"I will."
Then Tanehokahoka turned to the other birds and said,
"E Tui, because you were too scared to come down from the forest roof, from now on you will wear the two white feathers at your throat as the mark of a coward.
Pukeko, because you did not want to get your feet wet, you will live forever in the swamp.
Pipiwharauroa, because you were too busy building your nest, from now on you will never build another nest again, but lay your eggs in other birds nests.
But you kiwi, because of your great sacrifice, you will become the most well known and most loved bird of them all."

MORE INFO: The car is a 1999 Ford Taurus with the base 3.0l V-6 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission and 30,000 miles total. It was likely a city car, but I got it used about 18 months ago. I drove it yesterday and it was fine until I was a few blocks from home. I pulled away from a stop sign and it shuddered as it shifted from first to second. This is the first time it's done anything like this. When I turned onto my street, the car must have wanted first gear again, but when I pressed the gas after making the turn, the engine revved as though it was in neutral. I was coasting at about 10 miles per hour at this point, and the engine was completely disconnected from the wheels, revving freely. I took my foot off the gas completely, the engine dropped to idle, then the transmission decided that I was rolling fast enough to shift to second. The shift was rough, but the car would now accelerate. I stopped at the curb (fortunately, this happened about 200 feet from my house!) and again, had no drive whatsoever. There were no idiot lights illuminated on the dash. This morning, I started the car and it engaged reverse and first gear without trouble. The transmission fluid, though cold, was within the cross hatched area with the car in park and the engine idling. I have not driven it more than 2 feet yet, but I'm concerned that, once the transmission heats up, it will again fail to select first gear (that is, I assume the computer is trying to engage first, but the band is failing to do its job). Since there wasn't any noise or drive whatsoever, I assume this is an electrical problem of some sort rather than a worn band, since there were no symptoms until this complete failure. I am modestly adept at fixing things, so if it's a sensor or wire that is bad, I can probably manage to replace it myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can also buy a scanner if this is likely to help diagnose the problem. Any suggestions on scanner brands that could diagnose transmission problems in this car? Thanks for your advice!

The first ten sentences of Harry Potter's and the Philosopher's Stone are:
"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense.
Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large moustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbours. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere.
The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it. They didn't think they could bear it if anyone found out about the Potters. Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Durlsey's sister, but they hadn't met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be. The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbours would say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but they had never even seen him."

Noah was of Akkadian heritage, though he was also part Hurrian. He was born around 1760 BC in the city of Hanoch near the Tigris River (now the ruins of Hamoukan, eastern Syria). This was the city founded by Cain. There he was a vintner and sporadically a priest of Adonai. He was a descendant of Adammu (born around 2030 BC), a prince of Ur who had married his wife Hova in Urkesh (Mozah, Syria), got into serious religious trouble preaching monotheism (for the god Adonai, or Adonis), and who then moved to a large estate near the city of Nisibis (present-day Nusaybin, Turkey). He had three sons named Cain, Abel and Seth. Cain killed Abel in a religious argument and was banished from Nisibis. Accompanied by his brother Seth, he moved east towards the Tigris until he came to the ruins of an ancient city. Cain built a new city amidst the ruins and called it Hanoch after his son. Cain became the ruler and Seth the priest of the new settlement. The descendants of Cain were the kings of Hanoch, while the descendants of Seth were the high priests. But gradually the people of Hanoch stopped believing in Adonai and began worshipping many gods. Finally the priest Lamech shut the temple down and became a vintner, as was his son Noah. But it was at this time that King Jabal III of Hanoch became evil, and started sacrificing people to the gods. Noah was married to the king's sister Naamah, and thus was safe, but Noah shuddered for the fate of his people. One night Noah had a dream in which God commanded him to build a gigantic boat, which he promptly did. His neighbors laughed at him, for Hanoch was some miles from the river. But shortly afterwards the Tigris River overflowed in a gigantic flood and the city of Hanoch was destroyed. Only Noah and his family survived in the Ark. The wall of water swept them many miles south through the flooded plain until they fetched up against the Sinjar Mountains. There Noah disembarked and offered sacrifice for his celebrated escape. But Noah loved the riverlands no more, he was afraid of them. He moved his entire family to the highlands of Mannaea and lived in the town of Zolcarda (now Igdir, Turkey) under the shadow of Mount Ararat. There he died around 1680 BC, and was buried in a cave in the side of the mountain. His sons Shem and Ham then moved back to the Middle East, but his other son Japheth moved to Thrace.
