One View:
Sangha is important to Buddhistst since sangha refers to our companions on the Buddhist path. These companions can be people that are on the path with us and it can also refer to the community of ordained monks and nuns.
Sangha is also important in terms of the refuge practice, which is often described as
the entrance to Buddhism. In this practice, we take refuge to Buddha, Dharma and the Noble Sangha. This means that we accept the Buddha as our guide, we follow the Dharma (teachings of the Buddha) as the path, and accept the Sangha as our companions. According to the Mahayana, in this context Sangha refers to beings who are already very advanced on the Buddhist path, i.e. who are on the path of seeing and beyond, which means that they are already liberated from Samsara.
Another View:
Sangha Day is the second most important Buddhist festival. It is a celebration in honour of the Sangha, or the Buddhist community. For some Buddhists Sangha refers only to monks and nuns. It is a chance for people to reaffirm their commitment to Buddhist practices and traditions. So Sangha is important to Buddhists because it's a chance for people to commit to Buddhist practice and traditions.
