Sabino Springuett

(b Parinacocha, Ayacucho, 12 July 1913). Peruvian painter and teacher. He studied at the Escuela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes in Lima under Daniel Hern?ndez, Jorge Vinatea Reinoso and Jos? Sabogal, graduating in 1934. Even in his earliest work he showed a special interest in the vernacular, although he maintained a certain distance from the emphasis on indigenous subject-matter shown in the work of Sabogal. A skilful painter with a fresh and graceful use of colour, he had a preference for the deserted landscape of the Peruvian coast and for images related to those seen in the high-quality crafts of his native province, although he also produced some abstract paintings characterized by strong contrasts. In addition he executed a number of murals: in Lima for the Universidad Nacional de Ingenier?a, the Ministry of Public Health and the Eternit factory, and also in Miraflores. From 1943 to 1974 Springuett taught at the Escuela de Bellas Artes.
