Canada's former flag, known as the "Red Ensign," was never Canada's "official" flag.

The Red Ensign went through several variations. The most recent version of the Red Ensign had a red background, with a Union Jack comprising the upper left quadrant, and the shield of Canada's Coat of Arms on the right.

The red ensign flag, is a red flag with the British union flag in the upper quadrant nearest the flag pole (hoist).

It is used on British registered merchant vessels, to identyfy the nationality and flown at the stern.

Foreign vessels visiting UK waters, fly the red ensign on the starboard side of the mast, as a courtesy flag.

The UK is one of a few countries who have a different flag from their national one, for use at sea.

The red ensign may have a badge, or symbol, added in the main part of the flag (known as defacing) for special uses and identities. For example, the Isle of man merchant flag, has the three leg symbol on the red ensign.

A flag flown at sea is known as an ensign. They can be Red, Blue or White. Civilian and Merchant vessels fly the Red Ensign, Navy Vessels fly either the Red, Blue of White depending on the rank of the Unit. Ensigns are used in cases where it is illegal to fly the National flag, such as at sea from a British ship.

It has been around for about a century, but the present "blue ensign" has only been the official Australian flag since 1954. In World War I Australian soldiers were usually placed in units under British command, so they fought under the Union Jack. In World War 2 there were three flags around -- the blue ensign, the red ensign, and a white ensign (on which the stars were coloured blue). Most Australians fought under the red ensign, a flag like the present flag, but with a red background for the stars instead of a blue.

Like most of the nations of the British Commonwealth of Nations, the flag of Australia uses the same colors as the flag of the United Kingdom - namely red, white, and blue. It actually incorporates the Union Jack in the upper left corner and then adds the Southern Cross to the field to the right and a seven pointed "Commonwealth Star" to the field below the Union Jack. Usually the stars are displayed on a blue field (the Blue Ensign) but there is a variant which uses a red field - the Australian Red Ensign. The Red Ensign is flown by maritime vessels. From 1901 to 1954 the Red Ensign was used as a civil flag by State and local governments, private organisations and individuals. During that time the Blue Ensign was reserved for use by the Commonwealth Government, the Australian Olympic team and the military as a saluting flag at all reviews and ceremonial parades. In 1941, Prime Minister Robert Menzies stated that there should be no restrictions on private citizens using the Blue Ensign on land and, in 1947, Prime Minister Ben Chifley reaffirmed this position but it wasn't until the passage of the Flags Act 1953 that the restriction on civilians flying the Blue Ensign was officially lifted after which use of the Red Ensign on land became a rarity.

The Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No 8 of 1903 Announced that King Edward VII approved designs for the flag of Australia, known as the Commonwealth blue ensign, and for the flag of the merchant navy, known as the Commonwealth red ensign.

The general public also used the red ensign on land. In 1941, Prime Minister the Rt Hon Robert Menzies better dead then red) He was a Prime minister that got a lot of millage out of his anti Communist stance, at a time when Australia was engaged in wars against Communist (red) country's succeeded in replacing the red for the blue ensign as a national emblem. The Flags Act 1953ended confusion about which ensign to use. An amendment to the Flags Act 1953 was passed in 1998 to ensure that the Australian National Flag can be changed only with the agreement of the Australian people.

The present Canadian flag is the red-and-white 'Maple Leaf' flag. It has two large red borders on each side, with a red maple leaf on a white background in the centre. There have been a few flags used by Canada. The one used immediately prior to the 'Maple Leaf' was known as the 'Canadian Red Ensign.' The Red Ensign contained the British 'Union Jack' in its upper left portion, with the Canadian Coat of Arms on the right, on a red background. Some Canadian provinces fly a 'red ensign' that displays its provincial coat of arms.
