Percy Spencer was in his 40s when he invented the microwave oven in 1945. He was born on July 9, 1894, and invented the microwave while working for Raytheon.

An engineer named Percy Spencer, who was involved with the construction of magnetrons for use in radar. (A magnetron is the microwave generating part of a microwave oven.) He worked for Raytheon, and when he found a melted chocolate bar partially melted in his pocket, he deduced that leaking microwave energy was the cause. To test his theory, he put food in a metal box and microwaved it, and it heated up very quickly. On the 8th of October, 1945, Raytheon filed for a patent, and the microwave oven was born.

The idea of using microwave energy to cook food was accidentally discovered by Percy LeBaron Spencer of the Raytheon Company when he found that radar waves had melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experiments showed that microwave heating could raise the internal temperature of many foods far more rapidly than a conventional oven. The first Raytheon commercial microwave oven was the 1161 Radarange, which was marketed in 1954. Rated at 1600 watts, it was so large and expensive that it was practical only for restaurant and institutional use.

Percy Spencer, an engineer for Raytheon, invented the microwave oven in the early 40s. Raytheon patented it in 1945 and began marketing the Radarange in 1947. The Radarange was six feet tall, weighed 750 pounds, and cost $5,000 ... and didn't sell particularly well.

1 answer

Percy Spencer, the engineer who came up with the idea for the microwave oven, was working for Raytheon Company in Waltham, Massachusetts, at the time he got the idea.

This device, which Raytheon patented on October 8, 1945, appeared in 1947. The "Radarange" was a monster; it was about six feet tall and weighed over 700 pounds.

Further information: Percy LeBaron Spencer is considered to be the inventor of the microwave oven. He was working as an engineer with the Raytheon company when he was experimenting with and testing a magnetron. The magnetron had already been invented during WWII and allowed the Allies to determine the exact locations of Nazi war machines and arsenals, as the magnetron produced microwaves which radar then bounced off the arsenals, and back to the Allies. It was while testing the magnetron following the war, that Dr Spencer reached into his pocket for his chocolate bar, and discovered it had completely melted. He made the connection between the melted chocolate and the heat-producing magnetron, and tested his theory on a bag of unpopped corn kernels, which then popped. Next, he placed an egg in front of the magnetron. The egg exploded.

Dr Spencer is therefore credited with discovering one of the critical components of the microwave oven. Development of the microwave oven grew out of his observations, and by 1947 a commercial oven was being sold by Raytheon.
