In php (php: hypertext preprocessor) the web server goes through the page and executes the php to generate the HTML page you're about to see. When your web browser processes the web page with it's layout engine, to give you what you see from all that confusing HTML, that's the main processing.

It's actually 3 stages: preprocessing, compilation and linking.
Preprocessing deals with all the preprocessor directives (all lines beginning with #). So a line such as #include<stdio.h> will effectively copy/paste the contents of the stdio.h header in place of the directive. The header itself may also contain preprocessor directives and these must be processed prior to insertion. Macros are also processed at this stage and all comments are stripped out. The end result is a translation unit that contains pure C code with absolutely no macros, no directives and no comments whatsoever. The translation unit is usually stored in working memory, however your IDE may include a switch that allows you to examine the contents of the translation unit.
The compiler processes each translation unit in isolation. Since the compiler cannot see any other translation units, only names with internal linkage can be resolved at compile time. The compiler produces an object file from the translation unit. The object file contains machine code along with a table of any names that couldn't be resolved by the compiler (those with external linkage).
Once all translation units have been compiled, the linker can examine the object files and resolve the outstanding external linkage problems, essentially linking all the object files into a single executable.
Problems can occur at any stage. For instance, preprocessing could result in a macro expansion that generates code that cannot be compiled. The compiler cannot resolve these problems because the compiler never saw the macro, it only saw the code that was generated by the preprocessor. So although it can identify the problem in the translation unit, it cannot identify where that problem originated. This is why macros are so difficult to debug: the compiler cannot help you.
Aside from macro problems, the compiler can identify and help you resolve a wide range of problems in your code thus it pays to make use of it as much as possible. The compiler can also statically assert your assumptions, perform compile-time computations and optimise your code through inline expansion, thus ensuring your code is error free and operates at peak performance.
Link-time errors are more difficult to deal with, but usually mean you've violated the one-definition rule (ODR) in some way, either by providing two different definitions for the same name or by not providing any definition of a name.
Even if no errors occur and linking is successful, it does not mean your executable is error free. The computer will only do exactly what you've told it to do, but it cannot account for logic errors at runtime. Many of these can be caught at compile time by making prudent use of static assertions, however this isn't always possible so you should also provide "sanity" checks wherever necessary and include appropriate error handling wherever runtime logic cannot be guaranteed to hold.

In C, the convention is to use ALL CAPS when naming macros. Ideally the name should be as ugly as possible so it stands out from actual code. This makes it much clearer to the reader that it is a macro and not simply an "ordinary" identifier. Remember that macros are not actually part of the language; they are not type safe, are often difficult to read, and the compiler cannot help us debug them. They are best thought of as being code generators; the compiler only sees the "pure" C code generated after preprocessing. It doesn't actually care how the code was generated, but generated code doesn't exist in the source so it cannot identify where any problems may have originated from.
In C++, we use type safe templates and template metaprogramming rather than macros. Macros still have their uses in C++ (particularly when debugging), but the more we enlist the compiler to check our code the fewer problems we'll encounter. If a concept can be expressed directly in code, then that is the preferred way of doing it. We generally only use macros when there is no alternative or where a macro provides some benefit that cannot be easily expressed in code.

An enumeration is a group of named integral constants. An enumeration is also a type thus it provides type safety. When passing a constant to a function, an enumeration eliminate values that are not part of the group, thus allowing the compiler to catch errors that would otherwise slip through.
A set or pre-processor definitions (or macro definitions) do not provide any type safety and are never actually seen by compiler (they are processed before the compiler sees the resultant code). Macros are nothing more than a text-replacement system that effectively allow programmers to create a language within the programming language and thus create code that would be difficult if not impossible to produce using the language alone. However, when the language provides a simpler, type-safe mechanism, it is always better to utilise it and thus enlist the help of the compiler to eliminate errors. Macros do have their uses, particularly when debugging, but they must be used only when it is appropriate to do so. Enumerations are preferred over a set of macro definitions every time.
Some languages also permit enumeration classes, which gives stronger guarantees than a "plain" enumeration, not least eliminating the implicit promotion between enumerated types and integral types.

Compilation is a three-phase process: preprocessing, compilation and linking.
The preprocessor's job is to prepare a source file (translation unit) for compilation. This is achieved by reading each source file, stripping out the user-comments, performing macro substitutions and acting upon any conditional compilation directives, writing the output to an intermediate file which contains only C code and nothing else. Thus there will be one intermediate file generated for each translation unit.
The compiler's job is to create an object source file from an intermediate file. Object source files primarily consist of a machine code translation of the C source code followed by the symbol tables, which lists all the internal and external linkages of the translation unit. An external linkage is simply a type declaration which is not defined within the current translation unit; the definition may be provided by a type library or it may be provided by another translation unit. Either way, the compiler cannot generate the required machine code, so it uses a symbol (a placeholder) instead.
Once all translation units are compiled to object files, the linker examines the linkage tables and uses that information to generate a single machine code executable from the object source, substituting the placeholders generated by the compiler and adjusting memory offsets to suit the resultant code.

All pre-processor directives begin with a # symbol. One of the most-used pre-processor directives is the #define directive, which has the following syntax:
#define SYMBOL definition
This defines a macro. During preprocessing, all occurrences of SYMBOL within your source code will be replaced with whatever is written in the definition (which includes everything up to the end of the line).
#define PI 3.14159
Here, all occurrences of the symbol PI within your source code will be replaced with the character sequence 3.14159. So if your source contained the following function:

While this may well seem a convenient method of defining constants, it is not. Macros should never be used to define constants. If you need a constant, use an actual constant. If the constant must be calculated at compile time, then use a constant expression. In this case we can define PI as follows:

Note that the literal value 3.14159 takes no account of the implementation's precision because the compiler will convert it to a value of 3.141590. Conditional compilation is achieve through preprocessor directives. First, define the preprocessor symbols upon which conditional compilation depends, then test them using #if and #else preprocessor directives. A #endif directive indicates the end of the nearest enclosing conditional block, thus conditional blocks may be nested.

To write C code to cater for different target platforms we use a combination of C standard library code, conditional compilation. All C standard library code is cross platform and we should use it as much as possible. All third-party libraries should be as generic as possible. If we must use system-specific code or libraries, then we need to use conditional compilation.
Conditional compilation occurs during the preprocessing stage. The preprocessor (also known as the precompiler) prepares our code for compilation. Note that the compiler doesn't compile our source code, it actually compiles the code output by the preprocessor, also known as the intermediate source. The intermediate source files are usually deleted after compilation is complete, however your compiler will include a switch which allows these files to be retained so that you can see the actual code that was compiled by the compiler.
Preprocessing primarily processes all lines that begin with the # symbol. Thus a #include directive tells the preprocessor to import the named header into the intermediate source (the imported file is also preprocessed). The preprocessor also creates a table of macro symbols. Some of these symbols are passed via the command line however others are macro definitions (#define directives) embedded in the code itself. These definitions are stripped out of the intermediate source, but when a macro symbol is encountered in your code, the stored definition allows the preprocessor to generate the appropriate C code in it place. Note that the compiler never sees the macro -- it only sees the expanded code -- hence the compiler cannot help you to debug macros defined as functions.
In other words, the preprocessor allows us to generate a C source file that will change depending on which macros are currently defined (or not defined, as the case may be). One the more common uses of conditional compilation is to cater for differences between debug and non-debug builds, as shown by this example:

If the NDEBUG macro is not defined then we are compiling a debug build, thus the code in the ellipses (...) will be included in the intermediate source. But if NDEBUG is defined, then we are compiling a non-debug build and the code will not be included in the intermediate source. The NDEBUG macro must be defined via the command line. Often, the source will also include a macro such that when NDEBUG is not defined, a DEBUG macro is defined instead, thus allowing us to use the more intuitive #ifdef DEBUG directive instead of #ifndef NDEBUG. However, NDEBUG is part of the C standard and should always be examined before defining any other non-standard debug macros such as DEBUG.
Platform-dependent code makes use of platform-dependent macros. These are typically defined internally by the compiler itself, however some compilers cater for two or more platforms and we can supply the specific macros we require for a given build via the command line. Visual Studio is an example of this because it must cater for 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms as well Itanium, ARM and other platforms. To define the appropriate macro(s) we simply choose the target platform in the appropriate build properties of the project:

Projects can have two or more builds associated with them. Each build environment creates a unique set of macros that allow us to generate machine code for all supported platforms from the same source. The source may also include code for other platforms such as Unix/Linux, but so long as that code is conditionally compiled with the appropriate macros, Visual Studio will simply ignore it because those macros are not defined by Visual Studio. Similarly, when the source is compiled by a compiler that doesn't support the Windows platforms, the Windows-specific code will be ignored by that compiler.
