The first bicycle prototype was invented by Baron Karl von Drais in 1817 in Mannheim, Germany.
The first bicycle called velocipeda was built by french nobleman comte de sivrac in 1791
Most historians are of the opinion that it was Ernest Michaux who invented the bicycle. But it should not be forgotten that others also helped in its invention. Ernest Michaux first partenered with another man named Pierre Michaux, his father in the invention of bicycle. In the 1860s they built a carriage that looked something like the bicycle people know of today, though it wasn't perfect. Then in 1861, Ernest finally ended up with the modern bike after doing innovations to it.
There's some debate about that, but a German named Karl (von) Drais patented a two-wheeled contraption he called the running machine in 1818.
Two frenchmen, Pierre Michaux and Pierre Lallement, added drive by attaching cranks to the front wheel in the early 1860´s.
Then Englishman John Kemp Starley came along, and 1885 introduced the chain driven "safety" bike, which is surprisingly similar to bikes of today.

"Boneshaker" was a colloquial term for the first bicycles with pedals - so named for their shaky, uncomfortable ride. A number of inventors contributed to the evolution and design of the modern bicycle, but credit for the first successful design & commercialization goes to Pierre and Ernest Michaux of the Michaux Company. In 1867, their Velocipede debuted. History remembers this "Boneshaker" as the first "true bicycle," because it had two wheels, a seat and pedals. However, it wouldn't be until the 1869 debut of the high-wheel or ordinary bicycle that the public would begin to use the term.
