French Literature Companion:

Pierre-Antoine-Augustin de Piis

Piis, Pierre-Antoine-Augustin de (1755-1832). A French Vicar of Bray, he served many regimes, while composing comic operas and light verse of all kinds, which he defended against fashionable melancholy in ‘Aux détracteurs de la poésie badine’. His L'Harmonie imitative de la langue française (1785) is a lively verse treatise on poetic onomatopoeia, with detailed examples.
