Goodwill is an asset because, if you have a great reputation, people are going to be more likely to buy your products. Trademarks are an asset because using trademarks is what allows a company to distinguish its products from other companies' products in such a way that people will buy your products instead of the other guys'. Patents are an asset because they allow you the exclusive right to produce a good in a way that is better (hopefully) than the way everybody else produces that good.
