There are 47 (including some that Japanese insist are not prefectures because they don't use the word.) Prefecture in Japanese is Ken. Chiba-ken, for example, or Aomori-ken. There is also fu, as in Kyoto-fu and Osaka-fu. Plus to, as in Tokyo-to and Hokkaido. fu, to, ken are all administrative units.
