A pre-Oedipal mother conflict denotes the emotions and ideas that the mind keeps in the unconscious, via dynamic repression. This concentrates on a child's desire to have sexual relations with the parent of the opposite sex.
1 answer
The Oedipal complex is resolved with the influence of the father over the adolescent boy's development. The complex is linked with what are seen as normal stages in human development. The Oedipal complex recognizes the role of the mother, as the giver of life, in the early development of male children. But that influential role diminishes as the boy grows older and needs to learn how to be a husband and father from his own father.
1 answer
According to Freud, the stage that follows the resolution of the Oedipal complex is the latency stage. During this stage, sexual impulses are repressed, and children focus more on developing social and intellectual skills.

That Oedipus albeit unknowingly is attracted to his own mother is the example of the Oedipal complex in the play "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. -- 405 B.C.E.).
Specifically, the Oedipal complex gets its name from the story of Theban King Oedipus. It refers to a boy desiring his mother and hating his father. It is possible to outgrow the experience and move into mature, healthy, non-incestuous relationships. But it is not healthy to become stuck in the experience, as Oedipus does when he turns his fantasy into reality by killing his father, Theban King Laius, and marrying his mother, Theban Queen Jocasta.
1 answer
Such would be termed an incestuous relationship, and may be specifically referred to as an Oedipal relationship (after the Greek myth of Oedipus).

While Hamlet written by William Shakespeare is not necessarily modern literature, it is more modern than Oedipus Rex and there are numerous articles and essays written about Hamlets Oedipal complex and in Lawrence Oliver's version of the film that complex is embraced, shockingly so. Ironically, the Oedipal complex brought to us by Sigmund Freud describes the sexual desire for ones own mother, which Oedipus Rex arguably did not have. He married his mother not knowing she was his mother and upon discovery that this is what he had done, fell into great despair.
Other works of modern literature or film where Oedipal complexes can be found or extrapolated are The Graduate and a film directed by Berotlucci called Luna. While in the graduate Mrs Robinson is not his mother, she is certainly old enough to be his mother and a close friend to Benjiman's own mother. In the film Luna, it is entirely about a sexual relationship between mother and son.

The "Oedipal Complex", like every other thing that Sigmund Freud came up with, is totally without basis, and his been discarded for a long time now as a real psychological disorder. Freud came up with his ideas that are now obviously based on his uncomfortable relationship with his father. Had Freud been a real scientist, he would have found that mothers are much more involved with their offsprings' psychological disorders (on average) than the fathers are.

The Oedipal complex, as proposed by Sigmund Freud, refers to a child's unconscious sexual desire for the opposite-sex parent, typically accompanied by feelings of rivalry and jealousy toward the same-sex parent. Freud believed that this complex was a normal and crucial stage of development in the formation of the child's personality, particularly during the phallic stage of psychosexual development.

It's up for debate, and is subject to opinion and theoretical analysis. In Psycho, there is an obvious presence of an Oedipal Complex, as in the Birds.
Remember, there are some people who still deny the idea of the Oedipus complex itself... it is, after all , a theory.
1 answer
"Oedipal" typically refers to the Oedipus complex, a psychoanalytic concept by Freud where individuals experience unconscious sexual desires for their parent of the opposite sex and resentment towards the other parent. This complex plays a role in early childhood development and can impact later relationships and behavior.

Some themes in "My Oedipus Complex" by Frank O'Connor include childhood innocence, competition for parental attention, and the complexities of family relationships. The story explores the Oedipal complex through the perspective of a young boy navigating his feelings towards his father and his mother.

Psychoanalysis can be applied to "Thérèse Raquin" by Emile Zola to analyze the characters' unconscious desires, motivations, and conflicts. It can help explore Thérèse’s repressed emotions, Laurent’s aggressive instincts, and Camille's Oedipal complex. By examining these psychological elements, psychoanalysis can offer insights into the characters' behaviors and the novel's dark themes.
1 answer
This is known as the Oedipus complex, a concept introduced by Sigmund Freud in psychoanalytic theory. It involves a child's unconscious desire for the parent of the opposite sex and jealousy towards the parent of the same sex.

According to Freud's Psychosexual stages of development, no. For the Oedipal complex to apply the child must enter the phallic stage of development, the age group that corresponds to this stage is 4-6 yrs old. However, if the teenage boy has unresolved issues in this stage of development, then I think Freud might be inclined to say that he has "fixated" at this stage, meaning until he resolves his issues at this stage, this teenage boy will continue to wrestle with this.

In "The Rocking-Horse Winner," the protagonist Paul's relentless quest for his mother's love and approval mirrors the Oedipus complex. His efforts to win money to please his mother, his emotional neglect by his mother despite his efforts, and his deep yearning for her validation all exemplify the Oedipal themes of unresolved desire for a parent's affection leading to psychological turmoil.

Overall, the novel delves into the complexities of family dynamics, love, and personal growth through its richly developed characters.

A Freudian reading is essentially the application of the Freudian model to the characters in a book. Freud's model of the psyche contained three elements: # The id: Undisciplined desires for pleasure, sexual gratification, aggression, and so on # The superego: the conscience which registers the prohibitions of morality and culture # The ego: the place where the conflict between the id and the superego works itself out. One common element of the Freudian model is the Oedipal complex, where the son never grows out of his attachment with his mother. A Freudian reading is reading the book with these concepts in mind and using them to judge how/why the characters act the way they do.

In the early twentieth century, it became fashionable to apply Freudian concepts to literature. In particular, the Oedipus Complex, which is a theory that men secretly wish to kill their fathers and seduce their mothers, was used to explain Hamlet's relationship with Gertrude. This theory was influencial on Lawrence Olivier's award-winning film of the play in 1948, but is now considered passé.
The "oedipal complex" is a dead-end as far as Shakespearian criticism is concerned, first because Shaskespeare never heard of it, but more importantly because there is no such thing. The Greek myth of Oedipus is about the ritual succession of kingship under the old, pre-Olympian religion, whereby the claimant killed the old king and married the queen, who was the real power. The myth was misconstrued by later Greeks, who were horrified by the idea of female political authority. See Robert Graves, the Greek Myths.
Sigmund Freud, who looked inside himself and seemed to find everyone else in there too, reasoned that because he seemed to have a thing for his mother, every other man must also. He took the later, patriarchal Greek misinterpretation of the original Oedipus story as the proof of his "oedipal complex."

Some of Sigmund Freud's idiosyncrasies included his fondness for cigars, his reliance on his own interpretations of dreams, and his controversial views on sexuality, including the Oedipus complex. Freud's work also focused heavily on the unconscious mind and the role of childhood experiences in shaping adult behavior.

We can contribute a child's oral fixation to Freudian theory - known as the first of Freud's biologically determined drives. The core drive is sexual - broadly defined to include sensations that involve excitation or tension and satisfaction or release. The focus of the sexual drive shifts with maturation: oral stage (as found in infancy and toddlerhood); oedipal stage (pre-school); and, the genital stage (puberty and beyond). Though as you may be well aware, controversy has always been associated with Freudian theories.

Oedipus, according to Sophocles' plays, is raised as an orphan in a remote countryside. When he returns to Thebes, the city where he was born, he unknowingly kills his father, the king of Thebes, and marries his mother.
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) borrowed from ancient literature when describing what he called the Oedipal complex, where males desire their mother while attempting to replace their father. The thus described complex is a bit discredited in modern psychology, seeing as Freud was mostly a very crazy guy who loved to do Cocaine, but this theory in particular seems to have the ring of truth to it.

Usually when a female chooses bad boys the factors involved are not only connected with the Oedipus complex. Anyway the female Oedipus complex is called Electra complex and it is connected with an attempt to fall in love for the father in order to bring him away from the mother. Anyway these things are not that simple. In my experience the so called pre-Oedipal stages ( the stages before the Oedipal complex ) influence this much, much more. Usually there are factors involved which came into play even before Oedipus for example connected with the chest of the mother or the behavior of the father or with the absence of the mother or an excessive authoritarian presence of her mother. For example one common factor is a conflict with a too authoritarian mother. A typical trait of the females who get involved with bad boys is that they had an authoritarian mother who did not give them space and love enough. For this reason when the bad boy comes the girl is not able to recognize him as such. She feels she can be free with him and feel all the forbidden emotions she was not allowed herself to feel for the authoritarian behavior of the mother. On the converse another group of girls are the ones who grew up in borderline families where the mother was without borders, asocial and totally spoiled herself. For this reason the girl is used to guys who are spoiled and borderline and is unable to recognize the bad boy for such. The absence of father or the presence of an abusive father also play a very important role. If a safe male figure is absent from her childhood or there is an abusive male figure she may be very prone to fall for the bad boy.

Mark Wahlberg stars in one of his first features as a hoodlum drug dealer from the wrong side of the trackswho falls in love with Nicole Walker, an upper-middle-class high school girl (Reese Witherspoon). In this psycho-drama (with the emphasis on psycho), Nicole happily loses her virginity to her first love, but, when she begins to doubt the relationship, his tenderness turns to violence, as he stalks and terrorizes her and her friends and family. The girl's father never trusted him in the first place, but his reservations about his daughter's first serious boyfriend are interpreted as Oedipal paranoia, until the boy and his drug-dealing, date-raping buddies besiege the overly fortified house in a twisted attempt to win back Nicole's love. The Seattle setting juxtaposes a grunge rock underworld with an over-privileged suburban household, and includes a very sexual ride on a roller-coaster. And yes, former underwear model Wahlberg appears shirtless several times.

The exact reason why Gertrude drinks from the poison cup is not clear based on the text. Ultimately, there are two options 1) It's accidental - the cup was there, she was thirsty, she didn't realize it was poisoned.
2) It's intentional - she realizes Claudius is trying to kill her son, and drinks to keep it from Hamlet.
Olivier's 1948 film version leans towards option 2, as indicated by the shots of Gertrude before she drinks. Other Oedipal interpretations will similarly indicate that she knows what she's doing and why.
However, there is little in what she says that suggests she knows the cup is poisoned. The king asks her not to drink it, she says she will. He notes in an aside that it is the cup with poison, and when dying she recognizes what has happened. The simpler explanation is that she does not realize it until too late.
