The Haiyuan fault is a major tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Tibetan Plate, representing ongoing collision between these two plates. The region is characterized by high seismic activity due to the tectonic forces at play, with the potential for large earthquakes. The movement along this fault is responsible for shaping the landscape of the region and has significant implications for seismic hazard in the area.

China is actually majority Atheist or Shenist and the population of Muslims is less than 2% of the population, so to say that China "believes" in Islam, overshoots the mark. However, Islam is the majority religion of Xinjiang Autonomous Region and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and a well-represented religion in Qinghai and Gansu Provinces. It is popular in these regions because the Turkic Muslim Armies conquered these areas in the Battle of Talas against the Tang Chinese in 750 C.E. and were the predominant power in the region until 1755, when the Qing Dynasty overpowered the Turkic peoples and took the region back. However, by this point, the almost the entire population had become Muslims.

You've gotten through all the boring stuff. Now comes the big one. This earthquake started in Shaanxi, China, and devestated an area over 520 miles! More than 20 meter deep crevices were made during this earthquake.More than 97 countries were shaken by this enourmous earthquake. A staggering 830,000 people died during this massive tremor. Over 60% of some country's population were killed. The cost of this earthquake cannot be written in todays terms, because it is so large. This earthquake was only an 8 on the Richter Scale, only 1 Gigaton.
Number 2.) The Tangshan Earthquake. On July 28, 1976, the "Great" Tangshan Earthquake struck Tangshan, Hebei. This shock was believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century. The Chinese Government said that 655,000 people were killed, but latest research has believed that the toll was not as much, only 255,000, compared to the 655,000. The earthquake only lasted 10 seconds, but the magnetude made up for the short time. Seismographs recorded this earthquake as a 8.2 in some areas, a 2.2 Gigaton earthquake. The earthquake struck very early in the morning, when people were asleep. This left very little time to react to this earthquake. Tangshan was believed to be a region with very low risk of earthquakes, so the buildings were not to be made earthquake-proof. The earthquake was 4 miles long by 5 miles wide, leaving a massive area crumbled. The total damage was nearly 10 billion yuan, or $1.3 billion.
Number 3.) the Haiyuan Earthquake.240,000 people were killed on the December 16, 1920 earthquake that hit Haiyuan County, Ningxia. The Richter Scale recorded this earthquake as a 7.8, 700 Megatons, but is still being discussed. Chinese Geologists believe that the earthquake could have been a 8.5, 5.6 Gigatons, instead of a 7.8. This earthquake was felt for over 125 miles and the aftershocks lasted over 3 years. It was also called the 1920 Gansu Earthquake because Ningxia was a part of Gansu when the earthquake occurred.

BEIJING, China -- Parts of China's Great Wall are in danger because of reckless human activities, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Xinhua quoted a heritage expert Wednesday as saying new roads being built in western China have made up to 40 openings in the Shaanxi province section of the wall. Energy projects are also having an impact.
China's Great Wall, which was begun in the 7th century B.C., is a major tourist attraction and "must-see" for overseas visitors.
Most visit the wall at Badaling north of Beijing, but the full Great Wall extends for 6,000 kilometers (3750 miles) from the Jiayu Pass in Gansu province in the west to the mouth of the Yalu River in Liaoning province in the east.
Kang Lanying, former director of the Yulin municipal cultural heritage committee, told Xinhua that of 850 kilometers of the Great Wall constructed in Shaanxi during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), only 600 kilometers now survived.
More than 2,000 kilometers of the Wall runs through Shaanxi, crossing 14 counties and cities. It was built from the Warring States period (475 B.C.-221 B.C.) to the Ming Dynasty, and is designated as a major cultural relic under state protection.
But an official with the Shaanxi cultural heritage bureau quoted by Xinhua said destruction of the wall resulting from transportation and energy projects had grown worse in recent years.
Shaanxi province officials have issued an order prohibiting "excessive and destructive exploitation" of the Great Wall.
A similar situation exists in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, where part of the wall in Ningwu city's Linhe town, built in the Ming Dynasty, was cut into three parts to make way for roads.
Liu Hong'an, director of the Ningwu cultural heritage bureau, said the roads were built during a recent festival and left two openings 3 meters and 5 meters wide respectively.
Liu said Ningxia had been a "museum" of the Great Wall for a long time, as the total length of the wall in the region was more than 1,500 kilometers. Parts were built in the Warring States era, and the subsequent Qin, Han, Sui and Ming dynasties.
Liu said natural erosion and human damage were putting the Great Wall under threat of aggravated destruction.
"It calls for the attention of the whole of society to protect the Great Wall and to end the human destruction," Liu said, according to Xinhua.

China's abundance of plant life ranks it among the top in the world. For example, with an area almost exactly that of the continental United States, China has nearly twice as many plant species, about 32,000 (compared to 17,000 for the U.S. and Canada combined) or one-eighth of the world's total. China's plant species include almost all the major plants that grow in the northern hemisphere's frigid, temperate and tropical zones. In addition, China has more than 7,000 species of woody plants, including 2,800-odd tree species. Found only in China are the metasequoia, Chinese cypress, Cathay silver fir, China fir, golden larch, Taiwan fir, Fujian cypress, dove-tree, eucommia and camplotheca acuminata. The metasequoia, a tall species of arbor, is considered to be one of the oldest and rarest plants in the world. The golden larch, one of only five species of rare garden trees in the world, grows in the mountainous areas in the Yangtze River Valley. Its coin-shaped leaves on short branches are green in spring and summer, turning yellow in autumn. China is home to more than 2,000 species of edible plants and over 3,000 species of medicinal plants. Ginseng from the Changbai Mountains, safflowers from Tibet, Chinese wolfberry from Ningxia and notoginseng from Yunnan and Guizhou are particularly well-known Chinese herbal medicines. China has a wide variety of flowering plants, including the world-renowned peony that is indigenous to China and considered one of the country's national flowers.China's diverse plant life includes more than 2,800 species of trees, such as metasequoia, bamboo, palm, oak, China fir, evergreen, and China cypress
