Near-em-berg'i-a or near-em-ber'ji-a. Cupflower . Tropical American herbs or subshrubs comprising about 30 species, 4 grown for their attractive tubular flowers.

Description
Leaves alternate, somewhat scattered, without marginal teeth. Flowers white or pale blue, mostly near the ends of twigs. Calyx more or less bell-shaped, 5-parted. Corolla long-tubed, the 5-lobed limb abruptly expanded, throat yellow. Stamens 5, protruding, one shorter than the others.

How to Grow
Start seeds indoors in early spring. If hardened off, seedlings are frost-hardy and can be set out 2-3 weeks before last frost. Needs moist, well-drained soil. Prefers warm weather. These plants are good for hanging baskets.

Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea
Cupflower . 6-15 in. (15-38 cm) high. Flowers numerous, 1 in. (2.5 cm) wide, violet-blue with throat yellow. Argentina. The hardiest of all cupflowers. Perennial where winters are mild; elsewhere grown as a half-hardy annual.
