Without a doubt, misdirection is the strongest tool shared by not only magicians and mentalists, but politicians and religious figures as well.
The most common perception of misdirection held by the public is something along the lines of, "make them look over there while something tricky is going on over here". While there are forms of misdirection that accomplishes this (notable experts on such maneuvers include Apollo Robbins and the late Tony Slydini), magicians employ all sorts of subtler, more devious psychological tricks. A form of misdirection that is exploited by particularly cunning magicians is that of multi-method misdirection. By using many small tricks that don't have an explicit effect to HIDE the method that causes the explicit effect, it is possible to create an illusion of something absolutely impossible occurring. Studying the works of David P. Abbott, Karl Germain, Teller, and Banachek will help understand this concept.

Magic tricks often rely on principles of psychology, misdirection, sleight of hand, and optical illusions to create the illusion of the impossible. Magicians use a combination of skill, practice, and showmanship to manipulate the audience's perception and attention, leading them to draw incorrect conclusions about what is happening. By carefully controlling what the audience sees and believes, magicians are able to create seemingly magical effects that defy explanation.

They don't.
1 answer
In general they don't - magic is based on illusion, which is a method of misdirection based on known principles and techniques. The paranormal however, involves things that cannot be explained by current scientific or other rational means. Although groups like my own, TAPS, and others can use science and scientific equipment to detect entities and record paranormal activity, not enough is known about how entities are able to manifest, why they do, why they remain, etc.
Magic also relies on events that must be able to be called upon when required - Paranormal activity never, or rarely, happens when people wish it to. It happens when it happens. For that reason alone, Magicians cannot rely on the paranormal.
