Miracle in the Gorbals

Ballet in one act with choreography by Helpmann, libretto by Michael Bentall, music by Bliss, and designs by Burra. Premiered 26 Oct. 1944 by Sadler's Wells Ballet at the Princess Theatre in London, with Helpmann, Clayden, Shearer, and Rassine. A dance-drama about Christ being re-born in 20th-century society, in this case the slums of Glasgow, with his Passion and death providing the context for a modern morality play. In the ballet, Christ is known as the Stranger, the role danced by Helpmann.
