AnswerContrary to the above, the serpent is never named. It is simply called the 'most cunning of the beasts', and is never ever equated with Satan.

In fact, the early Jews did not even have an idea of a personification of evil (ie the devil, Satan, lucifer) as we do. The idea that somehow the serpent represented Satan was a much later interpretation.

Arguably, not all lies are bad. Sometimes they are seen as more of a social lubricant, and at other times, they can sometimes prevent harm to others. Here are the typical reasons that people lie:

1. To escape the consequences of their actions. They may fear their spouse finding out about an affair, or maybe they committed a very serious crime and don't want to go to prison.

2. To get along with others. Sometimes, it is easier to lie than to risk offending someone. For instance, is there ever a correct way to answer the question about whether a particular dress makes a woman look fat? She is not asking out of a desire to get the truth. She already believes she is fat or she wouldn't be asking it. Instead, she is likely pitching for a compliment or reassurance. Or if someone's clothes are ugly, and they ask, it may be easier to just say, "Well, you do have interesting tastes." If a business competitor asks how well you are doing, a good standard answer is, "Surprising." That is a bit evasive and ambiguous, since it could be surprisingly well or surprisingly bad.

3. For the presumed good of others. For instance, a policeman may lie when someone asks over the phone if a family member died. The reason they would lie would be to keep the person from harming themselves or risking the lives of others. They might drive wildly to the hospital. But telling them their family member is injured will make them less likely to get in a wreck themselves on the way to the hospital. Then at the scene, the officer can tell the truth.

4. To get out of a dangerous situation. You might have to assure an unstable person that you did or didn't do certain things, even if what you are telling them is deceptive, just to get out of the situation alive. Then that will buy time to get away or to contact the police. When dealing with the mentally ill, you might have to play along with some of their wild accusations, maybe even apologize for doing what you didn't do, all just to help them deescalate.

5. To catch liars or wrongdoers. For instance, if a confronted cheating spouse says they were at the movies, you might ask them to tell you about the wreck in front of the theater. If they have a ready answer, then they likely are telling the truth. However, if they stall, stammer, and perhaps are unable to look you in the eye, then you know they are lying. The police also lie to suspects, and being an undercover agent is a type of lying because they are not actually one of the criminals they are trying to help build a case against.

6. To be noble or modest. A mother might lie about being hungry or her food preferences so the kids won't feel guilty taking the last piece of dessert. Or a person might lie about a kind deed they did or give the credit to another just to keep the focus off of themselves.

7. To get others in trouble. Sometimes people lie out of revenge or maliciousness. So they make up something or claim they saw something they didn't.

8. Practical jokes and entertainment. Playing a trick on someone is, in essence, a form of lying. If you tell someone the sky is green, they will likely look, particularly if your tale is convincing enough. Even acting is a lie, since if you dress up as a police officer in a television show, you are still not an actual police officer.

9. To commit acts of fraud or other criminal acts. Scam artists lie to try to con you into giving them your money. Or a hacker may call up someone, spin a story about being a maintenance technician, and needing their password to access the system. But they are not even related to the company nor a technician of any sort. A similar example is phishing. That is when someone passes as someone you trust to try to trick you into giving them personal information, passwords, and financial details. Many people go BK on just credit card debt (probably the most common thing in fact), with no secured or priority debt. You go bankrupt, not the debt. It involves all of your assets and all of your debts. The question of good is metaphysical, but we will treat here primarily concerning morality as this is probably what the answer calls for. Morality for a Catholic is based upon the will's uniformity with the dictates of human nature and harmony with the Divine Law. When one acts according to one's own nature, the act is good. For instance, it is human nature to preserve one's own life, to not murder or steal, to help establish, maintain and protect a social body, to assist other humans, etc. To violate human nature by some unnatural act is to act poorly or do bad. Because human beings are sometimes imperfect in their reasoning abilities, able to affected by poor judgment, emotions and passions, Catholics believe that God revealed a Divine Law that not only reinforces the natural law written on the fleshy tablets of men's hearts, but clearly dictates higher realities to which man's spiritual and corporeal nature must respond. Man is obliged to conform his will to the Divine Law as justice demands he respect the directives of his Creator. To this end, if a human acts in accordance and harmony with God's Law, he or she acts well or does good. If they act against or violate God's Law they act wrongly or do evil.

Human beings are rarely purely good or bad, however, each one of their human acts has a morality. For those humans throughout history to the present who were or are in ignorance of the Divine Law, who have no access or means to access the Divine revelation, they must live according to the natural law and they will commit good or evil acts depending on their ability to conform to the natural law through the discernment of their conscience. However, in this day and age, when the Gospel is spread over all the Earth, the chances of such invincible, inculpable ignorance are practically zero. Catholics believe that one's ability to commit and merit from a good act requires unity with God through grace. This unity is broken by a violation of the natural or divine law, which Catholics call a sin. They also believe that sin can be venial or mortal depending on the offense, how serious the offense is, and whether one has chosen to reject their natural and supernatural obligations out of weakness or out of maliciousness. If one commits a mortal sin, this would separate the person from the grace and unity of God, whereas venial sins still maintain this grace but must nevertheless be atoned for in the natural and supernatural order as justice demands. Mortal sin is a terrible disunity; even if one continues to make acts that are in accordance with the natural and divine law, these are not good acts since the will has not been reconciled to God and hence the orientation of all human acts is distorted. Humans that fall into sin may seek to reestablish themselves as agents of good by satisfying natural justice and/or divine justice (for Catholics, this is done through the humble act and sacrament of Confession and performance of penance). Reestablishing harmony with nature and the Divine is a good act and will once again align one's will with God and what is moral allowing one to make good and thus meritorious acts.

Human beings are not "good" or "bad" - they are complex; it is their actions are either good and bad. What matters is their harmony with nature and God, if they cause disharmony they act as an agent of evil, if they act rightly they act as an agent of good. In the end, those souls that die in harmony with nature and God's Will will be granted the Beatific Vision, the manifestation of the union with God they already lived while on Earth by being agents of good. Those that die in disharmony with nature and God will be granted hell, the manifestation of their disunity already begun on earth by being agents of evil. As a note of interest pertaining to metaphysical good, even in hell, complexity remains, as to exist is "good", thus even damned souls have a sliver of good remaining in so much as they exist. This is why the damned would rather destroy themselves - it is not so much to escape the sufferings of their conscience, body and soul as to spite their Creator Who maintains them in existence through His positive Will.

When you file bankruptcy, it involves ALL of your asserts and liabilities...not only those you want it to or chose.

All are given different classes or levels of priority. Some are even exempt - either as a debt to be excused, or an asset to be used. Again, you don't chose (because you would say include only what I owe and don't want, exempt or exclude everything else. Like thinking it would be right if I don't want the mortgage or the tax, but I do want the house.) And the creditors don't chose...can you guess why? (Although the most they would likely ask for is to get what you promised to pay or owe them).

If you have more assets than liabilities...everyone gets paid.

If you have less, than you lose everything and some people get paid less than they would have. Something like a vehicle loan or mortgage is a secured creditor....that is, their loan is secured by the property say the car. They get to take the car back for themselves, and if it isn't worth enough to pay off the loan, then the additional they become an unsecured general creditor for and get to get paid the additional with that group. That group may get only a small amount on the $ owed, as they are the last to receive any of your assets. AnswerYou cannot declare bankruptcy because of credit card debt. You must have more solid debt than credit card. I'm not sure what the above intended, but it is incorrect to think there is any quality or quantity of debt required to file. Many people go BK on just credit card debt (probably the most common thing in fact), with no secured or priority debt. (In fact, generally a credit card co that gets a judgment and can secure it to a property of yours...probably won't have the BK clear it, as judgments aren't covered in BK).

But you should also note that BK doesn't just eliminate debts...or debts of your choice.

You go bankrupt, not the debt. It involves all of your assets and all of your debts. In basic form...all of your assets (again minus some few exempt things), are surrendered and liquidated with the money used to pay as much of the debts as possible (all debts are given a priority - first as secured like a car loan or unsecured which means against everything generally)...some are paid more, some less)...any resulting deficiency may be eliminated (wiped clean). You do not get to get rid of the debt AND keep what you may have gotten with it, (or invested/paid for elsewhere, instead of paying the amount owed).
